Bayern Left Without a Backup for Luis Diaz After Ibrahimovic's Exit and Cardozo's Injury
Ibrahimovic is set to leave and Cardozo suffered a back injury, once again leaving the Colombian without alternatives on the wing.
Five goals, a comfortable rout and a Colombian who even got on the scoresheet late in the game. Bayern Munich's 5-1 win over Stuttgart in the Bundesliga opener at the Allianz Arena left an excellent feeling for Vincent Kompany's side, with Luis Diaz starting and taking part in the goal-scoring party. But as soon as the celebrations died down, the club's brass started eyeing the left wing with some concern. And it's easy to see why.
Bayern's transfer window wasn't what many expected. Once again, as in past seasons, the club moved cautiously, adding just two signings and preferring to lean on the academy and on players who earned their place through preseason. One of them was Ibrahimovic, a 20-year-old winger who had put together a strong campaign on loan at Heidenheim and who, somewhat informally, earned the nickname "Luis Diaz's backup" during summer friendlies.
An announcement that changed everything
That's where the plan started to unravel. Before the league season kicked off, sporting director Max Eberl dropped a line that landed like a bucket of cold water on the young forward's camp. He acknowledged that Ibrahimovic had had a good season and that the club had "kept an eye" on his development during preseason, but he was clear about what comes next.
"Now I see that it could be difficult for him at Bayern. That's why we said that if there's an offer out there that works well for both sides, something could go forward"Max Eberl
Eberl went even further, making clear there's no room to bring in reinforcements for the rest of the window, so if Ibrahimovic ultimately packs his bags, everything points to the backup spot on the left staying empty. No backup plan signed, no name lined up.
The injury that complicates things even further
As if Ibrahimovic's departure weren't enough of a headache, another piece of bad news arrived from the reserve side on Saturday, August 29. Bayern II beat Illertissen 2-0, but the win took a back seat to the injury suffered by Maycon Cardozo, the Brazilian forward who had also emerged as a candidate to compete with Luis Diaz for minutes.
Cardozo hurt his back and had to be substituted in tears, visibly in pain. The exact diagnosis hasn't come out yet, but the scene suggests he could be out for several weeks. The Brazilian had been enjoying a standout preseason, with goals and performances that had put him on Kompany's radar as a real option for that flank.
With Ibrahimovic on his way out and Cardozo injured, Bayern is left without the two players who seemed destined to give Luis Diaz a rest on the left wing. The situation looks all too similar to last season, when the Colombian ended up overloaded with minutes due to a lack of cover. If nobody comes in before the transfer window closes, that story threatens to repeat itself.
