Bayern Munich extends Eberl and Dreesen through 2029 after last season's double
The Bavarian club is banking on continuity in its leadership after winning the Bundesliga and the German Cup.
While other clubs stumble around trying to figure out who's in charge, Bayern Munich did just the opposite: it bet on continuity. The Bavarian club announced the contract extension of Max Eberl and Jan-Christian Dreesen through June 2029, a clear signal that the leadership team behind last season's double will remain in charge for years to come.
The news came after a supervisory board meeting on Tuesday night. No rumors, no speculation: the club itself moved to secure its two key figures in the sporting and executive structure.
"Our leadership team is in an outstanding position to drive FC Bayern forward both on the sporting and commercial side, and to maintain its leading position in Europe," the club said in its statement.
A rough start for Eberl
It's worth remembering where Eberl came from. The 52-year-old executive took charge of Bayern's transfer dealings in February 2024, and the beginning was anything but smooth. He went looking for a coach and ran into one door slammed after another: Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick all turned him down. He even tried to convince Thomas Tuchel to stay on when Tuchel was already on his way out, and that didn't work either. In the end, Vincent Kompany came along. It was a gamble that raised eyebrows at the time, since the Belgian was coming off a relegation with Burnley in the Premier League. Today that decision looks a lot different: Kompany led Bayern to two straight Bundesliga titles and, this past season, added the German Cup to complete the double. It's hard to ask for a better outcome from a hire born out of so many rejections.
Dreesen, the numbers man who ended up at the top
On the other side is Dreesen, 58, with a different story but just as tied to the club. He arrived at Bayern from the banking sector to serve as chief financial officer and gradually climbed the ranks: vice chairman of the supervisory board since 2014 and, finally, named chief executive officer in May 2023, when the club decided to remove Oliver Kahn from the position.
The fact that both men renewed at the same time, with the same expiration date, is no coincidence. Bayern wants a single, coordinated command over both the footballing and administrative sides, something the club has struggled to maintain at times in recent years. With Kompany on the bench, Eberl building the roster and Dreesen running the executive side, the club has locked in institutional stability through 2029, right as it competes on equal footing for the top spot in Europe.
