Belgrano and River Have More Than Pride on the Line: A Playoff Spot

The Pirata arrives unbeaten in six straight matches and the Millonario has no choice but to win in the rematch of the Clausura final.

Some matches sell themselves, and this is one of them. Belgrano and River are set to meet again, but this time there's no title on the line like in the last Clausura final. Instead, something just as urgent is at stake: a playoff spot. The match is set for Sunday, October 18 at the Gigante de Alberdi, for Matchday 13 of Zone B in the 2026 Clausura Tournament, kicking off at 8:15 p.m. (Argentina, Chile and Uruguay time) and 6:15 p.m. for Colombia, Peru and Ecuador.

The context has shifted quite a bit since that final. The "Pirata" needs a win to stay in the lead pack of Group B, while the "Millonario" arrives under pressure to take all three points if it hopes to crack the top eight that advance to the next phase. Two very different situations colliding over the same prize.

How both teams arrive

Belgrano is riding high: the team is unbeaten in six straight matches, with three draws and three consecutive wins. Ricardo Zielinski's side just thrashed Racing 2-0 and has no intention of giving up ground in the fight for the overall table.

River, meanwhile, comes in with a tighter record: just one loss in its last nine matches, though it could only manage a 1-1 draw against Sarmiento midweek. Leonardo Ponzio's squad knows the margin for error is shrinking and that three points are a must to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Players to watch

On the Cordoba side, four names stand out as difference makers: Lucas Zelarrayan, Franco Vazquez, Nicolas Fernandez and Emiliano Rigoni.

For River, all eyes are on Gonzalo Montiel, who scored against Sarmiento and is in excellent form, along with Thiago Almada and Angel Correa, two key pieces for a team that needs to rediscover the taste of victory.

The most recent meeting between the two leaves a bittersweet taste for the Nunez club: in the last Clausura final, Belgrano won 3-2 thanks to a brace from Nicolas "Uvita" Fernandez and a goal from Leonardo Morales. River's goals came from Tomas Galvan and Facundo Colidio.

With that memory still fresh, the Gigante de Alberdi promises another intense afternoon. Whoever takes the three points will make a big step forward: Belgrano to stay on top, River to stay alive in the race.

The match will be broadcast live on ESPN Premium in Argentina and on Disney+ throughout the rest of Latin America.
