Benfica rout Omonia Nicosia 4-1 to stay atop the Europa League table

After a level first half, Marco Silva's side blew the game open after the break with goals from Pavlidis, Aursnes and Prestianni to claim a third straight win in the league phase.

Benfica rout Omonia Nicosia 4-1 to stay atop the Europa League table

Benfica started out winning on a gift and ended up winning on merit. The final score, 1-4 in favor of the Portuguese side at the GSP Stadium, was built in barely half an hour of second-half soccer, as Marco Silva's team turned a tied game into a rout with three goals between the 48th and 84th minutes.

The match, part of the Europa League league phase, opened with a stroke of luck Omonia Nicosia did not see coming. In the 13th minute, an own goal by Loic Nego put Benfica ahead without the visitors having to do much to get there. But Omonia did not fold: with the clock at 41, Andronikos Kakoullis rose unmarked in the box to head home the equalizer off a cross from Jaden Montnor on a well-worked counter, a goal that needed a VAR check before it was allowed to stand.

The teams went into the break tied at 1-1, and the match looked wide open. That illusion did not last long. Right at the start of the second half, in the 48th minute, Vangelis Pavlidis finished at point-blank range with his right foot, picking out the top left corner to put Benfica back in front. From there the game changed completely. Fredrik Aursnes extended the lead in the 75th minute with a strike from the middle of the box, and Gianluca Prestianni, who had come on as a substitute, sealed the rout in the 84th after an assist from Dodi Lukebakio on another quick counterattack.

A dominance reflected in the numbers

The match stats back up what was clear on the field: a Benfica side that controlled possession and piled up chances against an Omonia team that could barely keep pace in the second half.

With 23 shots to Omonia's 7, Benfica made clear who carried the weight of the game. In terms of xG, an in-house estimate calculated from the match's shots, Benfica produced 3.315 expected goals to just 0.848 for Omonia, a gap that confirms the rout was no fluke of the scoreline but a true reflection of a clear edge in chance creation.

That dominance stands in contrast to what had been projected before kickoff. In our preview we gave the visitors a 40% chance of winning, 31% for Omonia and 29% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.2 for the home side and 1.4 for Benfica, a total of 2.6. The reality ended up well above that projection: five goals between the two sides and a margin of victory for the visitors that our model did not anticipate at that scale.

What the result means in the standings

The win leaves Benfica, coached by Marco Silva, on top of the table with 9 points from 3 matches played, all won. Omonia Nicosia, managed by Henning Berg, sit on 6 points after two wins and a loss, now 3 points behind today's opponent. The match also leaves a clear picture: Omonia matched Benfica for the first 45 minutes, but Benfica shifted gears after the break and put the game away with clinical finishing in both boxes, built on the counterattacks that produced the goals from Aursnes and Prestianni.
