Bobb's 79th-minute left-footed strike gives Fulham a narrow win over Coventry
In a match that was even at times, a goal from Oscar Bobb off a corner sealed Fulham's 0-1 win at Coventry in the Premier League.

A corner kick and a crossed left-footed shot were all it took for Fulham to walk away from the Coventry Building Society Arena with all three points. Oscar Bobb finished in the 79th minute with his left foot, low and inside the left post, after an assist from Josh King off the corner, and that proved to be the only goal of the afternoon: 0-1 final in favor of the visitors in the Premier League.
Up to that point, the match had been an exchange of chances without reward. Coventry City came out with intensity and gave an early warning: Brandon Thomas-Asante tried his luck with his left foot in the very first minute, and both Bobby Thomas and Ethan Pinnock had early headers that drifted wide near the far post. Fulham answered with more possession and dangerous forays: Gonzalo García tried his luck in the 12th minute, Shea Charles forced a save at the near post in the 13th, and Josh King rattled the right post with a shot in the 17th minute. Despite all that, the score remained level at halftime.
The second half kept the same back-and-forth script. Jack Rudoni tried his luck from distance for Coventry, Calvin Bassey answered on Fulham's side, and Stephen Mfuni, who had come on after an injury to Bobby Thomas, had a close-range header that was well handled by the visiting goalkeeper. Fulham kept bringing on fresh legs, Rodrigo Muniz and César Palacios among them, and that freshness ended up making the difference: after a string of consecutive corners, the one in the 79th minute found Bobb unmarked to finish inside the box.
What the numbers say
Fulham clearly dominated possession, controlling 64% of the ball compared to Coventry City's 36% and nearly doubling their opponent's passing numbers. In shots, though, the match was far more even than that gap suggests.
| Stat | Coventry City | Fulham |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 36 | 64 |
| Shots | 13 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 2 | 3 |
| Corners | 4 | 6 |
| Passes | 352 | 646 |
| Fouls committed | 9 | 11 |
That parity in shots also shows up in our post-match expected goals estimate, calculated from the game's shot data: 0.6 for Coventry City and 0.604 for Fulham, essentially identical. In other words, in terms of chances created the match was very balanced, and the result ultimately came down to the finishing on a single set piece.
Before the match we had projected a 40% win probability for Fulham, 31% for Coventry City and a 29% chance of a draw, with expected goals of 1.23 for the home side and 1.44 for the visitors. The final result, tight and decided by a single goal, lines up with the visiting side's edge in the preview, though the total number of goals fell well short of the projection.
The win moves Fulham up to 12th place with 8 points from 8 games played (2 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses), while Coventry City stay in 19th place with 6 points from 8 outings (2 wins, no draws and 6 losses). Just two points separate the two sides in the table, a margin that doesn't suggest much of a gap in level between them, something the run of play backed up from start to finish. For Coventry City, who deserved more than they got on the scoreboard, there's the feeling of a missed opportunity at home; for Fulham, it came down to Bobb's efficiency at just the right moment.
