Boca Hunts for an Emergency Center Back, Three Names on the Shortlist
Injuries have exposed the fragility of the defense, and club officials are already negotiating with the agents of three players.

Boca's defense is springing leaks, and in the 2026 Clausura, nobody's hiding it anymore. Injuries hit exactly where the team is most vulnerable, reopening a question that's been circulating around the Ribera for weeks: should the club go out and sign a center back right now? For now, the answer seems to be yes. Rodolfo Arruabarrena and the front office have three names on their list and have already started making initial contact.
The first is Francisco Álvarez, 26, currently at Argentinos Juniors. According to Martín Árevalo on BDE, Marcelo Delgado has already called him personally to check on his fitness and where things stand with his contract. It's no small detail that Juan Román Riquelme keeps a good relationship with Cristian Malaspina, the president of the club from La Paternal, which always helps grease the wheels on these kinds of deals. The problem is the price: Álvarez has been playing at an extremely high level for several months, and Argentinos expects to get around six million dollars for him. That's where things get complicated, since it's not a figure Boca typically resolves in one stroke.
The second name is Nehuén Pérez, also 26, currently playing for Porto. Boca has already reached out to his agent to find out what he earns in Portugal, and the numbers, they say, lined up without any surprises. The good news is that the player himself would be open to returning to Argentine soccer, as long as Porto also signs off on it. It could be worked out as a loan or as an outright transfer, but the club insists the exit has to be handled cleanly, without any rush that could complicate the negotiation later. The next step, now, is club to club.
The third candidate is the trickiest of the three: Ignacio Ovando, just 19 years old and currently at Rosario Central. There, the problem isn't just the money, though that's part of it too: Rosario is asking for a figure close to ten million dollars for a kid who hasn't even come close to hitting the level expected of him yet. In fact, Boca hasn't even formally reached out to the Canalla. What's known is that Ovando has caught Lionel Scaloni's eye, and nobody would be surprised if he gets called up for the next FIFA date. If that happens, his price tag will only climb further, making the deal even harder to pull off.
Three very different profiles: one established and expensive, another with a salary agreement moving forward, and a young player who shows promise but costs a fortune. Boca has known about this problem for a while now; what remains to be seen is which of the three names actually becomes reality before the transfer window closes.
