Boca Faces a Final Stretch of 2026 With Up to Five Titles on the Line
Between the Superclasico against River, the Copa Argentina and the final against Atletico Mineiro, Boca is fighting for its spot in the 2027 Libertadores and could even open up extra slots for other Argentine clubs.
The euphoria of the Maracana has come and gone, as has the comeback against Vasco da Gama with Leandro Paredes as the hero of the night, and now the toughest part of the calendar arrives. Boca is heading into a final stretch of 2026 where every match carries double weight: each result can define not just its own fate, but that of several direct rivals in the race for the next Copa Libertadores.
For now, Boca remains the only Argentine club still alive on all four fronts that matter: the Annual Table, the Torneo Clausura, the Copa Argentina and the Copa Sudamericana. And the math is no small thing: win everything, and that's five titles once you count a possible Trofeo de Campeones. Is there really room for such a feat? The schedule will decide, but the club already knows there's almost no margin for error.
A calendar with no room to breathe
After Rio de Janeiro, the first test comes fast: Boca visits Independiente on Sunday, October 25, at 5:00 p.m., at Estadio Libertadores de America-Ricardo Enrique Bochini, for matchday 14 of Zone A of the Clausura. Independiente comes off a 1-1 draw in the Avellaneda derby against Racing, so it arrives with momentum of its own.
A week later, on November 1 at 3:00 p.m., comes the headline act: the Superclasico against River at La Bombonera, with the Clausura's regular phase nearing its conclusion. And the schedule doesn't let up: the following week, Boca hosts Defensa y Justicia again, in the match that closes out its commitments for the Annual Table.
There's still one more stop before the trip to Colombia: on Saturday, November 14, at 7:00 p.m., at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza, Boca takes on Banfield in the Copa Argentina semifinals, just seven days before the Sudamericana final against Atletico Mineiro, set for Saturday, November 21, in Barranquilla. That tight turnaround between the two matches means the squad's recovery will need careful management in the weeks leading up.
What's at stake in the Annual Table
In the season standings, Boca leads with 54 points, the same total as Argentinos Juniors, though with a better goal difference. Just one step below sit Rosario Central and Independiente Rivadavia with 53 points, and within a six-point range nine teams are bunched together, including Velez, River, Instituto, Belgrano and Gimnasia de La Plata. There are nine points left to play for, and Boca must win them all if it wants to claim the trophy and the direct ticket to the 2027 Libertadores. Winning the Sudamericana would carry an extra layer of meaning: it would be the club's first international title since the 2008 Recopa, the direct heir to that unforgettable 2007 Libertadores still remembered fondly at La Bombonera.
Now here's where things get interesting for the rest of Argentine soccer. If Boca ends up winning the Sudamericana, the Clausura, the Annual Table and the Copa Argentina, it would enter the Libertadores as continental champion and, in doing so, open up three additional slots in the league's overall standings. In that scenario, the top six in the Annual Table would qualify, right where Argentinos, Independiente Rivadavia, Central, Velez, River, Instituto, Belgrano and Gimnasia are all crowded together.
AFA's rulebook adds some important nuances. If Boca wins the Clausura, that unlocks an extra slot in the Annual Table, though the team that loses that final would only reach the Libertadores if it's among the top spots in the overall standings. The Copa Argentina works differently: if Boca is champion there, the rules do allow the runner-up (Platense or Atletico Tucuman) to claim a spot in the next Libertadores.
Boca, in fact, hasn't yet locked up its own berth in the 2027 continental tournament. To get there, it needs to meet one of four conditions: finish in the top three of the Annual Table, win the Sudamericana, win the Copa Argentina or lift the Clausura. And if it ends up adding more than one title, the benefit could even extend to River or other longtime rivals, something that won't sit well with the fans but would, in the end, speak to a Boca season that's been far more than successful.
If Boca manages to get through the four remaining rounds of the Copa Argentina and is crowned champion on December 12 in La Plata, the year still wouldn't be over: it would close out the season facing Belgrano, winner of the 2026 Apertura, in the Trofeo de Campeones.
