Boca beats River 1-0 and revisits a 266-game Superclasico history
In matchday 15 of the 2026 Apertura, Boca won by the narrowest of margins, and the all-time series now stands at 94 wins for the Xeneize, 88 for the Millonario and 84 draws.
Once again, the Superclasico came down to the slimmest of margins. Boca Juniors beat River Plate 1-0 in the latest installment, played for matchday 15 of the 2026 Apertura, and that tight scoreline was enough to claim bragging rights in the rivalry that never gets old.
Argentina's biggest derby needs no introduction, but the numbers behind it are always worth revisiting whenever these two teams meet, because they tell a story that goes well beyond ninety minutes. This Superclasico was the 266th in the history between the two clubs. Counting domestic league play and official national cups, they have met 234 times, and adding international competitions brings the total to 32 more clashes on top of that.
In the overall tally, Boca has 94 wins, River has 88, and there have been 84 draws. In goals, the Millonario has scored 323 and the Xeneize 342. There's a quirk that always comes up in these stats: the 0-0 from 1919 doesn't count, since that tournament ended up being annulled.
Looking only at AFA league matches, the record shows 218 games, with 80 wins for Boca, 73 for River and 65 draws. In national cups, the balance tilts toward the Millonario: of 16 meetings, River won 5, Boca won 3 and there were 8 draws. On the international stage, though, it's been split almost down the middle: of 32 clashes, Boca has won 11 and River 10.
There's one stat River fans love to bring up when head-to-head knockout series come up in conversation: they hold a 13 to 8 edge there. Something similar happens with finals, where the Millonario is also ahead, 2 to 1. And then there are the friendlies, which also get counted: 124 of them, with 46 wins for Boca, 41 for River and 37 draws.
What the recent clasicos left behind
To understand where the Superclasico stands today, it's worth looking back at the last few chapters. In the first meeting of 2026, before this 1-0, the Xeneize had already won 1-0 in Nunez on a penalty from Leandro Paredes. Before that, on November 9, 2025, Boca had won 2-0 at home with goals from Exequiel Zeballos and Miguel Merentiel.
River had gotten its revenge on April 27, 2025, winning 2-1 with goals from Franco Mastantuono and Sebastian Driussi, in a match where Merentiel had briefly leveled the score for Boca. 2024 had a bit of everything: a 1-1 draw in Nunez with goals from Pablo Solari and Cristian Medina, and a 3-2 win for Boca in Cordoba in the Copa de la Liga quarterfinals, with a brace from Merentiel and a goal from Edinson Cavani, after Miguel Borja had opened the scoring for River and Paulo Díaz had tried to pull one back late. That same year, in September, River had won 1-0 on a goal from Manuel Lanzini.
Going back a bit further, 2023 belonged to River in both meetings: 1-0 in the league with a goal from Borja and 0-2 in the Copa de la Liga with goals from Salomon Rondon and Enzo Diaz. In 2022, on the other hand, Boca swept both games: 0-1 at the Monumental with a goal from Sebastian Villa in the Copa de la Liga's interzonal stage, and 1-0 at La Bombonera with a goal from Dario Benedetto in matchday 18 of the Liga Profesional. Game after game, the Superclasico keeps writing tightly contested chapters, as this whole run of narrow results makes clear.
