Boca hosts Central Córdoba at La Bombonera with one eye on the Sudamericana
The Xeneize have gone seven games without a loss, but must take the field Friday with a lineup shaped by the upcoming clash with Sao Paulo.
La Bombonera fills up on a Friday night once again, and that alone changes the feel of the buildup. Boca hosts Central Córdoba this Friday, September 11, kicking off at 9:30 p.m. (Argentina, Uruguay and Chile time) and 7:30 p.m. for Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, in a matchup that corresponds to matchday nine of the 2026 Clausura Tournament. The broadcast will be available on ESPN Premium.
The match arrives at a particular moment for the home side. Boca has one eye on the domestic championship and the other on the Copa Sudamericana, where it will visit Sao Paulo on Tuesday after winning by the minimum margin in the first leg. That double workload is exactly what Central Córdoba could try to exploit, since Rodolfo Arruabarrena has been managing his rotation and hasn't ruled out resting some starters with the continental commitment in mind.
How both teams arrive
On the domestic front, the Xeneize remain steady: they've gone seven games without a loss since that 2-2 draw against Gimnasia in Mendoza. That consistency keeps them in the hunt for the annual table, the path that hands out spots for the 2027 Copa Libertadores, so every point Boca picks up in the Clausura carries extra weight beyond the three points on offer.
On the other side, Central Córdoba isn't having an easy time of it. The Ferroviario have gone four games without a win (one draw and three losses), and are coming off a 1-0 defeat to Independiente. Sebastián Domínguez needs his team to turn things around soon, because the annual table also punishes from below: that's where direct relegation gets decided, and failing to pick up three points is starting to take a toll.
Names to watch
For Boca, several players tend to make the difference: Alan Velasco, Leonel Flores, Santiago Ascacibar and Miguel Merentiel are drawing the most attention heading into the match. For the Santiago del Estero side, the key names are Lucas González, Fernando Martínez, Marco Iacobellis and Ezequiel Naya.
The most recent meeting between these two favors the home team. They faced off on May 2 of this year in Santiago del Estero, with Boca winning 2-1: goals from Velasco and Milton Giménez, with Michael Santos pulling one back for the home side on that occasion.
With Boca keeping half an eye on the upcoming clash with Sao Paulo and Central Córdoba in need of results to breathe easier in the standings, Friday's match at La Bombonera promises a game with very different motivations on each side of the pitch.
