Bouanga scores twice as LAFC thump Austin FC 3-1 with Son Heung-Min inspired
LAFC saw less of the ball but made it count, turning the game around and sealing it inside a twenty-minute burst in the second half against Austin FC in MLS.

Denis Bouanga broke the deadlock in the 51st minute with a close-range right-footed finish that flew into the top corner, and from there everything sped up at BMO Stadium. Los Angeles Football Club ended up routing Austin FC 3-1 in an MLS clash that stayed tight for 45 minutes before being decided in barely twenty, between the 51st and 71st minutes.
The first half was back and forth with nothing to show for it. LAFC created more, with Leo Walta testing the rival box with shots from distance, one of them off the crossbar in the 20th minute, and Bouanga trying his luck with a header, but Austin FC answered with corner kicks from Facundo Torres and the occasional run from Joseph Rosales. Neither side found the net, and the score was still 0-0 at the break.
The stretch that changed everything
The second half had barely started when LAFC's pressure finally paid off: in the 51st minute, Bouanga finished with his right foot from close range, set up by Son Heung-Min, for the 1-0. Austin FC didn't fold and leveled it in the 65th minute through Brandon Vazquez, who ripped a low shot from outside the box into the left side of the net off an assist from Myrto Uzuni. The tie lasted barely a minute: in the 66th, Bouanga struck again, this time from the center of the box, for the 2-1, once more set up by Son Heung-Min. Five minutes later, in the 71st, Son Heung-Min himself finished into the middle of the goal, assisted by Jacob Shaffelburg, to seal the final 3-1. Stoppage time brought shots from both sides, Brandon Vazquez, Christian Ramirez, Shaffelburg and Sergio Vasquez all had looks, but the scoreline held.
The numbers behind the result
The curious part is that Austin FC controlled more of the ball, but LAFC was far sharper near the opposing goal. That goes a long way toward explaining the final result.
| Stat | LAFC | Austin FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 39.6 | 60.4 |
| Shots | 28 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 11 | 4 |
| Big chances | 6 | - |
| Corners | 7 | 5 |
| Passes | 385 | 590 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 8 |
The shot count, 28 to 14, with 11 of LAFC's finding the target, explains why the home side ended up with such a wide gap on the scoreboard despite having less of the ball. Based on our estimate calculated from shot location, LAFC generated 4.65 expected goals in the match, well above Austin FC's 0.74, a gap that backs up the attacking edge Xavier Tamarit's team showed in the decisive minutes.
Before kickoff, our projection gave LAFC a 59% chance of winning, with a 25% probability of a draw and 16% for Austin FC, and we forecast a scoreline close to 1.81 expected goals for the home side against 0.85 for the visitors. The result went in the same direction as the favorite, though the final 3-1 comfortably beat that forecast, especially in LAFC's scoring tally.
What it means in the standings
In the Western Conference, LAFC came into this match with 45 points from 30 games played (12 wins, 9 draws and 9 losses), while Austin FC had 31 points from 29 matches (7 wins, 10 draws and 12 losses), a 14-point gap between the two sides before this result. The win lets LAFC, coached by Xavier Tamarit, hold its ground in the upper-middle part of the table, while Davy Arnaud's Austin FC still needs points to climb.
With Bouanga bagging a brace and Son Heung-Min fully involved in the attacking output (two assists and a goal), LAFC left a clear picture of what it can do when it makes its chances count: less of the ball, but far more bite.
