Bournemouth thrash Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford despite home side's dominance

Goals from Rayan, Tavernier and Evanilson made Bournemouth ruthless against a United side that had more possession and shots but couldn't find the net.

Bournemouth thrash Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford despite home side's dominance

Manchester United controlled the ball, fired off more shots on target, and still ended up thrashed on their own turf. That's the contradiction of what unfolded at Old Trafford, where Bournemouth walked away with a commanding 3-0 win thanks to a lethal first half and a long-range stunner in the second.

United had the ball, but Bournemouth had the finishing touch, and in soccer that tends to count for more. The visitors made the most of every chance they created while Michael Carrick's side kept running into a brick wall at the other end.

A first half to forget

The match started with Bournemouth causing problems in the air: just 3 minutes in, Evanilson had already tested the United defense with a header that sailed over the bar, and Marco Rose's side kept pressing down the flanks until it paid off. In the 37th minute, Rayan finished with his left foot from inside the box, low and into the corner, after a cross from Justin Kluivert that came from a free kick. The 0-1 changed the complexion of the match.

United had no time to regroup. Five minutes before halftime, in the 42nd minute, Marcus Tavernier struck with his left foot from the center of the box, assisted by Adrien Truffert, to make it 0-2. In between came a warning sign for the hosts: Bryan Mbeumo tested the goalkeeper in the 39th minute with a shot that was saved under the crossbar. It wasn't enough. United went into the break down two goals despite generating more of the play.

The third goal that sealed it

In the second half, United pushed forward with substitutions (Matheus Cunha, Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee all came on, among others) and had some chances, like Lisandro Martinez's shot in the 67th minute that was cleared off the post. But in the 70th minute came the decisive blow: Evanilson, from a long way out and at an almost impossible angle, unleashed a right-footed strike that found the middle of the goal off an assist from Lewis Cook. The 0-3 put the result beyond doubt, and what followed were scattered attempts from United (Shea Lacey, Mason Mount, Andrey Santos) that never found a way through.

What the numbers say

The stats back up that sense of hollow dominance: United had 62.6% possession and took 17 shots to Bournemouth's 10, but the visitors were far more clinical in the final third.

The xG generated in the match, our own estimate calculated from the shots taken, also backs up what played out on the field: 2.23 for Bournemouth against 0.99 for United. The visitors didn't just score three goals, they also created the more dangerous chances.

The result is a far cry from what we projected before kickoff, when we gave United a 40% chance of winning against 34% for Bournemouth, with a 26% chance of a draw, and expected goals of 1.67 for the hosts and 1.52 for the visitors. Reality turned out to be far kinder to Marco Rose's side than the model anticipated.

What it means in the standings

In the Premier League table, Manchester United sit in 16th place with 7 points from 8 matches played (1 win, 4 draws, 3 losses), while Bournemouth have 9 points from the same number of matches (2 wins, 3 draws, 3 losses) and sit 13th. The gap between the two sides is just 2 points, though the match itself showed a much wider gulf on the field.

United are still left with the task of turning possession into goals, something they couldn't manage this afternoon despite their best efforts. For Bournemouth, it was a reminder that efficiency can outweigh possession when it comes to picking up points on the road.
