Doumbia's brace and Mwanga's red card send Brest past Le Havre
Brest won 1-2 at Stade CMA CGM Océane thanks to two goals from Kamory Doumbia, handing the visitors the points in Matchday 3 of Ligue 1.

A penalty in the 11th minute cracked the door open, and Le Havre never quite managed to shut it again. Brest took all three points from the Stade CMA CGM Océane with a 1-2 win that was shaped by a red card and sealed by a Kamory Doumbia brace that gave the visitors just enough cushion to hold on until the final whistle.
The match, part of Ligue 1, opened with Le Havre pushing forward through Josh Maja as early as the 3rd minute, but it was Brest who broke through first. A penalty committed by Lionel Mpasi on Ludovic Ajorque, which also earned the goalkeeper a yellow card, allowed Doumbia to make it 0-1 from the spot with a strike to the right side of the net.
The turning point: Mwanga sees red
Le Havre had responded with chances from Mbwana Samatta, whose header crashed off the crossbar in the 13th minute, and from Amir Richardson, but the score stayed unchanged before halftime. Then, right at the end of first-half stoppage time, Junior Mwanga was sent off. With the home side down to ten men from the very first minute of the second half, the task suddenly got a lot harder.
The decisive blow came fast: in the 50th minute, a Brest counterattack ended with an assist from Mama Baldé, allowing Doumbia to finish with his left foot from the center of the box and complete his brace, making it 0-2 and effectively putting the game out of reach.
Le Havre refused to fold despite playing a man down. In the 77th minute, Enzo Koffi was fouled inside the box by Luck Zogbé, and the referee pointed to the spot for a second penalty of the match, this time in the home side's favor. Rayan Fofana, who had come on just minutes earlier, made no mistake and buried it into the top corner to make it 1-2 in the 78th minute. Stoppage time stretched to seven minutes due to medical stoppages for both goalkeepers, but the score held.
The numbers behind the game
Le Havre controlled more possession and racked up more passes, but Brest was far sharper in front of goal.
| Stat | Le Havre | Brest |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 56.2 | 43.8 |
| Shots | 18 | 19 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 9 |
| Corners | 5 | 5 |
| Passes | 453 | 367 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 18 |
The gap between total shots and shots on target tells much of the story: Le Havre fired off nearly as many attempts as their rivals, but only four of them truly tested the visiting goalkeeper, compared to nine from Brest. In terms of xG generated during the match, an in-house estimate based on shot location, Brest finished with 2.85 against Le Havre's 1.95, a gap that lines up with what the scoreboard showed.
The pre-match preview had pointed to a much tighter contest: 35% odds for Le Havre, 31% for a draw and 34% for Brest, with expected goals of 1.23 for the home side and 1.19 for the visitors. The final result, with Brest winning clearly and capitalizing on the red card, ended up far from that balanced forecast.
What it means in the standings
With this result, Brest moved to 5 points from 3 matches played, with a record of one win and two draws, no losses, putting them in fourth place in the league. Le Havre, meanwhile, is still searching for its first win: zero victories, one draw and two losses in three outings leave them in 16th place, just ahead of the relegation zone. The gap between the two clubs in the table now stands at 4 points, a clear sign that the start of the season has been far tougher for the home side than for their opponents on this occasion.
