Brest Routs Overwhelmed Angers 5-1

With four goals before halftime and Lefort's late red card, Brest ran roughshod over an Angers side that never found an answer in Ligue 1.

Brest Routs Overwhelmed Angers 5-1

Eight minutes. That's all it took Brest to get on the scoreboard, and by the time Angers tried to respond, they were already down by four goals. Stade Francis-Le Blé finished with a resounding 5-1 in favor of the home side, in a Ligue 1 match that was essentially decided before halftime.

The script couldn't have been clearer from the start. Ludovic Ajorque opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a close-range header off a cross from Hugo Magnetti, and Brest didn't let up: in the 16th minute, Lucas Tousart doubled the lead, also with a header, this time set up by Joris Chotard. The match hadn't even reached the half-hour mark when the third goal arrived: a foul by Ousmane Camara on Kamory Doumbia inside the box led to a penalty, which Kenny Lala converted in the 29th minute with a low shot just inside the left post. Before the break, in the 44th minute, Mama Baldé made it 4-0 with a right-footed finish assisted by Pathé Mboup. Angers headed to the locker room buried, having barely troubled Anthony Lopes all half.

The second half opened with a flash of pride from the visitors: almost immediately, in the 46th minute, Prosper Peter pulled one back with a header off a cross from Joseph Kalulu, breathing some life into the scoreline. But the hope was short-lived: seven minutes later, in the 53rd minute, Pathé Mboup restored the four-goal margin with a shot into the top corner, also assisted by Ajorque, to make it a final 5-1.

The closing stretch brought a strange refereeing episode. In the 57th minute, VAR called the referee over to review a possible red card for Jordan Lefort, and the initial call was overturned. But barely a minute later, in the 58th minute, Lefort still ended up with a straight red, leaving Angers down to ten men for a good chunk of the final stretch.

A Gap the Numbers Confirm

The match statistics reflect Brest's total dominance, as the home side not only struck first but was far superior in nearly every aspect of the game.

According to our after-the-fact estimate, Brest generated 3.79 expected goals in the match, well above the 1.19 racked up by Angers, a gap that lines up with the home side's seven big chances against just one for the visitors.

What's striking is that none of this was part of the pre-match script. Our projection had Brest at a 44 percent chance of winning, 31 percent for a draw and 25 percent for Angers, with combined expected goals of just 2.34 (1.36 for the home side and 0.97 for the visitors). The rout ended up more than doubling that goal expectation, making clear that not even the most generous forecast saw such a lopsided scoreline coming.

What It Means in the Standings

In the Ligue 1 table, Brest arrived with 8 points from 6 matches played (2 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses), while Angers had the same 7 points they still have now, the product of 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses in their 6 outings. Just one point separated the two sides before kickoff. The goal difference left by this 5-1 will weigh on both teams' overall balance, though the result alone already tells the story of a night in which Brest played on another level, and Angers, Lefort's red card included, came up short on almost every front.
