Brighton thrash Aston Villa 4-0 on Premier League opening day

It took just 30 minutes for the American Express Stadium to see the contest effectively end. Brighton and Hove Albion thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 on the opening weekend of the Premier League, with a devastating first half hour that left the visitors on the ropes long before the break.

The opener came almost by accident: in the 7th minute, Maxim De Cuyper cracked a shot off the right post and the rebound bounced off Victor Lindelöf's legs and into his own net. Aston Villa, who up to that point had produced the clearer chances through Emiliano Buendía testing the keeper from outside the box on three separate occasions without success, had no answer. Ten minutes later, in the 17th minute, De Cuyper made no mistake this time, finishing with his left foot from close range after a Georginio Rutter assist to make it 2-0.

The knockout blow arrived in barely 60 seconds. Jack Hinshelwood headed home unmarked to make it 3-0 in the 29th minute after a Diego Gómez cross, and a minute later, in the 30th, Hinshelwood struck again with a low shot from the center of the box to complete the rout at 4-0. In half an hour, Brighton had already settled the match.

As if that weren't enough for Aston Villa, the first half got even worse when João Gomes was sent off in the 39th minute, after a VAR review that first overturned the red card and then, a minute later, reinstated it following a scuffle. Down a man and four goals behind, the visitors reached halftime with nothing to argue about.

The second half was, above all, a formality. Brighton kept creating chances (Costinha struck the left post in the 64th minute and Diego Gómez tried his luck several times), but without the urgency of the first half, and the score stayed put despite efforts from both sides, including a Costinha header that was saved in the 89th minute.
