Brighton Thrash Crystal Palace 5-0 in Ruthless Display
With three goals in the first ten minutes and a complete performance, Brighton beat Crystal Palace 5-0 to cement their place in second in the Premier League.

Three minutes. That's all it took for Brighton and Hove Albion to go ahead, and before the quarter-hour mark the game was already all but decided. The final score at the American Express Stadium was a resounding 5-0 over Crystal Palace, the kind of scoreline that makes clear from the opening whistle who's in control and who's in trouble.
The first goal came almost by accident: in the 3rd minute, an own goal from Jaydee Canvot put the home side ahead. Far from easing off, Brighton stepped on the gas. In the 6th minute, Diego Gomez struck a right-footed effort from more than 30 yards that found the center of the net following a counterattack built by Olivier Boscagli, making it 2-0. Three minutes later, Yasin Ayari slotted home from the center of the box, set up by Charalampos Kostoulas, and the scoreboard already read 3-0 before ten minutes had even been played.
With that cushion, Brighton managed the rest of the first half comfortably, though Crystal Palace had a couple of chances, including a shot from Anan Khalaili that was saved right under the crossbar. Halftime arrived with the scoreboard already telling the story of a one-sided match.
The second half confirmed the gap
If anyone thought Brighton would take their foot off the pedal, they were wrong. Right at the start of the second half, in the 48th minute, Kostoulas finished with his left foot from the center of the box, by the left post, in a play that needed VAR confirmation before it was allowed to stand as 4-0.
Crystal Palace had their moments of resistance. Jean-Philippe Mateta rattled the crossbar with a shot in the 62nd minute, and later Jefferson Lerma headed against the left post from a corner, in one of the visitors' liveliest sequences. But it wasn't enough to change the course of the match. The final blow came in the 83rd minute: Jack Hinshelwood, who had come on from the bench, fired a right-footed shot from close range into the top left corner following a corner kick, sealing the final 5-0.
The numbers back up the rout
The match statistics clearly reflect the home side's dominance:
| Statistic | Brighton and Hove Albion | Crystal Palace |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 57.2 | 42.8 |
| Shots | 17 | 5 |
| Shots on target | 9 | 1 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 8 | 5 |
| Passes | 516 | 384 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 11 |
Brighton finished with nine shots on target against just one for Crystal Palace, a gap that on its own explains how the match unfolded. According to our estimate based on the shots taken in the match, Brighton generated 2.30 expected goals compared to Crystal Palace's 0.68, a gap that confirms the home side's superiority wasn't just a matter of clinical finishing on the day.
Going into the match, our projection gave Brighton a 58% chance of winning, with a 24% chance of a draw and 18% for Crystal Palace, with an expected 1.92 goals for the home side against 0.99 for the visitors, for a total of 2.90. The final result blew well past those numbers: five goals to none makes clear the match tilted far more toward Brighton than any pre-match forecast suggested.
Where it leaves the table
With this result in the Premier League, Brighton and Hove Albion remain in second place with 16 points from 7 matches played, while Crystal Palace sit in 14th with 7 points from the same number of matches, leaving a 9-point gap between the two sides. For Fabian Hurzeler's side it was a perfect afternoon; for Pierre Sage's team, one that leaves plenty to fix before their next match.
