Cáceres stays at América: the $8 million gap with Celta and two stories that don't add up

Celta insists it offered the $8 million América was asking for, but América maintains no formal proposal ever arrived.

Eight million dollars on the table and yet nobody can agree on what actually happened with that offer. That's the short version of the soap opera between América and Celta Vigo over Sebastián Cáceres, a case where both sides are telling stories that simply don't line up.

In transfer negotiations there's almost always a version from each side. But in this case the gap is so wide it feels like two entirely different negotiations are being described.

According to people close to the Uruguayan defender, the Spanish club met the price set by Coapa: 8 million dollars. That number didn't come out of nowhere. Sources close to the player say Celta first tested the waters with offers of 6 and 7 million, both turned down because América had fixed its asking price right at 8 million. When the Spanish club decided to meet that number, believing the deal would close right there, they ran into something they didn't expect: silence. Nobody from the América front office responded, and faced with no reply, Celta chose to pull the offer and look elsewhere in the market.

Inside América, though, the story told is quite different. There, the line is that no formal proposal ever arrived, no signed document, nothing on official letterhead from the Vigo club. As far as they're concerned, it never went beyond exploratory talks that never turned into a serious, written offer.

A player who knew about the interest

What is clear is that the Coapa front office informed Cáceres of Celta's interest and let him know that if an offer came in that worked for everyone, they were open to hearing it. That flexibility makes sense given the context: at América there's an awareness that the club's finances aren't in their best moment, and a well negotiated departure for the Uruguayan wouldn't have hurt.

Given that openness, it's hard to understand why the negotiation went nowhere. The answer may lie exactly in that gap between what one side considers a formal offer and what the other understands as a simple approach. Either way, the outcome was the same: Cáceres stays at América, at least for now, and Celta Vigo had to go looking for other options to strengthen its back line.

What does seem likely is that this isn't fully closed. With a player who drew real interest in Europe and a club that needs to raise funds, it remains to be seen whether at some point in the next transfer window both versions of the story finally meet in the middle.
