Cagliari Punishes Wasteful Atalanta with 2-1 Win at New Balance Arena

Atalanta went into the break level after dominating possession for almost the entire first half, and in the second period a penalty finished off their afternoon at the New Balance Arena: Cagliari took home all three points with a 2-1 win that leaves the Bergamo side with more questions than answers.

The match, part of Serie A, began with a cold blow for the home side. Just 18 minutes in, Paul Mendy finished with his left foot from the center of the box after an assist from Michel Adopo to make it 0-1. Atalanta pushed back and, near the end of the first half, found the equalizer: Gianluca Scamacca connected with his right foot off a free kick delivered by Charles De Ketelaere in the 40th minute, leveling it at 1-1 heading into halftime.

The second half followed a similar script: Atalanta controlled territory, but a single lapse proved costly. In the 59th minute, Sead Kolasinac committed a handball penalty inside the box after a foul on Alessandro Deiola, and a minute later Daniel Maldini made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-2, the final score. From there, the Bergamo side pushed forward with attacking substitutions (Krstovic, Raspadori and Pasalic all came on) and created several chances through Raspadori, Krstovic and Bellanova, but the scoreline held despite five minutes of stoppage time.

Dominance That Didn't Translate on the Scoreboard

The numbers make clear that Atalanta was the team driving the game: 61.6 percent possession and 22 shots to Cagliari's mere 5. Yet the visitors were far more clinical: Cagliari put all 5 of those shots on target, compared to just 4 out of 22 for Atalanta.

The xG figures, calculated after the match based on the shots taken, back up that sense of a tighter contest in terms of chance creation than the scoreline suggests: 1.544 for Atalanta against 1.294 for Cagliari, a much smaller gap than the lopsided shot count would imply, confirming that Cagliari made the most of the little it had.

The result also runs counter to what we projected beforehand: we gave Atalanta a 62 percent chance of winning, against 25 percent for a draw and just 13 percent for a Cagliari victory, with expected goals of 1.8 for the home side against 0.71 for Cagliari. None of that held up: it was Cagliari that walked away with the three points.

For Atalanta, the problem wasn't creating chances, the possession, shot and xG numbers all prove that, but rather finishing and defensive focus at key moments: a penalty and a clinical finish cost them the game despite having the ball for most of it. Cagliari, on the other hand, walks away with a win built on very little going forward, but with enough efficiency to take all three points on the road.
