Celta and Betis play out scoreless draw at Balaidos full of missed chances
A Deossa shot off the crossbar and several saves from Radu and Valles marked an even affair that ended without goals in LaLiga, leaving Betis in fourth place, eight points ahead of Celta.

Four minutes of stoppage time and not a single goal to celebrate: that's how the afternoon ended at Abanca-Balaidos, where Celta de Vigo and Real Betis settled for a 0-0 draw that left the feeling that just one final touch was missing. There were shots off the woodwork, crucial saves and attempts that missed by inches, but the scoreboard didn't budge through ninety minutes plus stoppage time.
The match, part of LaLiga, got going with Celta pushing forward from the opening minute. Before the quarter-hour mark the home side had already served clear notice: Hugo Gonzalez tested Alvaro Valles twice, first with a low shot from the right side of the box and then with a header that flew toward the top corner, both saved cleanly. Marcos Alonso and Yoel Lago also had chances during that early run of corners, but the goal wouldn't come.
Betis answered with Pellegrini's usual trademarks: patience, quick touches and runners arriving from deep. Natan came close with a header off an Isco corner kick, and Abde Ezzalzouli tried his luck with an angled shot that Ionut Radu handled without trouble. The first half ended scoreless despite the back and forth, with Ilaix Moriba picking up a yellow card for a dangerous challenge and Diego Llorente adding another for Betis.
The crossbar and the chances that didn't go in
The second half opened with the clearest warning of the entire match: in the 52nd minute, Nelson Deossa connected with a left-footed shot from the center of the box, the result of a counterattack built by Abde Ezzalzouli, that crashed off the crossbar. Two minutes later, Antony tried his luck from outside the area and Radu again responded well down low.
Celta, after bringing on Ferran Jutgla and Williot Swedberg and later sending in Iago Aspas for Pablo Duran, tried to recapture the bite it had shown early on, but the match had slowed considerably. Betis turned to its bench as well, bringing on Troy Parrott, Pablo Fornals, Marc Bartra and Giovani Lo Celso, and it was that group that produced the clearest chances of the closing stretch: two shots from Fornals from outside the box, both blocked, and an attempt from Troy Parrott in stoppage time that went wide. On the home side, Hugo Burcio and Aspas himself also tried their luck without success in the final minutes.
What the numbers show
Betis controlled the ball more and took more shots, though not necessarily with greater accuracy.
| Stat | Celta de Vigo | Real Betis |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 43.5 | 56.5 |
| Shots | 12 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 2 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 3 | 4 |
| Passes | 498 | 651 |
| Fouls committed | 9 | 12 |
Interestingly, Celta was sharper in front of goal despite seeing less of the ball, putting four shots on frame compared to just two for Betis. As for the xG generated in the match, an in-house estimate calculated from shot locations, the split was close: 0.908 for Celta and 1.102 for Betis, numbers that back up what played out on the field: a match with few clear-cut chances and plenty of defensive work.
The result also departs from our preview projections, where we gave Celta a 37% chance of winning, 28% for a draw and 35% for a visiting win, with combined expected goals of 2.77 (1.41 for the home side and 1.36 for the away side). The draw, the least likely of the three outcomes, ended up being the final result, and the total goals fell well short of what was projected.
What the draw means in the standings
So far this season, Celta de Vigo has 12 points from 10 matches played, with a record of 2 wins, 6 draws and 2 losses that places it in ninth position. Betis, meanwhile, sits on 20 points from the same number of matches, with 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses, holding onto fourth place. The gap between the two sides in the standings stands at 8 points, a distance this draw doesn't change much: Celta keeps picking up points thanks to its habit of avoiding defeat, while Betis remains comfortable in the upper reaches of the table despite failing to take all three points from Balaidos.
