César Huerta Ruled Out of Pumas Debut Against León With Muscle Issue

The 'Chino' felt discomfort in his lower back during training and is expected to be available for the match against Chivas.

The news landed like a bucket of cold water hours before kickoff. César Huerta will not face León this Thursday night at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, in what was set to be his homecoming in front of the fans who once saw him shine. Pumas confirmed the 'Chino' would sit out as a medical precaution, and while it doesn't sound serious, it leaves a bittersweet taste right when the fanbase was hoping to see him debut in the shirt that once made him a star.

The club explained it plainly in a statement: Huerta felt a muscular discomfort in his lower back during the training session ahead of the match. "Club Universidad Nacional reports that César Huerta will not play in today's match between Pumas and León as a medical precaution. The player felt, in yesterday's training session, muscular discomfort in his lower back," the club detailed. It added something that eases concerns a bit: "The club's medical staff is treating him so he can be available in the coming matches."

According to the club, that includes Sunday's match against Chivas at Estadio Akron, one of the hottest fixtures in Mexican soccer. The soccer explanation makes sense: Huerta arrived in good physical shape, but his lack of match rhythm caught up with him as soon as he began pushing himself at the same level as the rest of the squad under coach Esteban Solari. A muscle strain, nothing more, nothing less.

This return is no ordinary one. The 'Chino' comes back to Pumas after leaving in January 2025 for Europe, where he wore the colors of Anderlecht. Now he returns as the marquee signing, wearing the number 10 jersey and carrying the responsibility of being the name that calms a stretch that's already weighing on the club: six games without a win across all competitions, a 1-1 draw against Necaxa that ended in boos, and a 2-0 loss on the road to Tijuana.

A Savior Who First Needs Match Fitness

Is Huerta the savior Pumas need? Emotionally, without a doubt. His signing came at the exact moment the front office needed something to show the fans, and to take pressure off a coach under fire. But from a soccer standpoint, caution rules the day: at the last World Cup in 2026 he logged just 10 minutes against South Korea and 45 minutes against Australia, and in his final season in Belgium he featured in only 17 of the 54 matches Anderlecht played across the whole campaign.

Huerta himself was honest about that rough patch in his career. "Physically I'm doing very well, I'm at 100 percent. Then it's normal that after so much inactivity you need to build up your rhythm, and I feel good physically," he explained at his unveiling. He went further when discussing the injuries that held him back: "At the start of the second season I had a muscle problem that unfortunately didn't let me show what I am as a player."

I went through a difficult year, I don't see it as a setback, and it's a chance to reinvent myself and a chance to enjoy soccer again. I've gone several months without being on a field. I'm here because I want to play, I want to contribute, and I'm committed to this club.César Huerta

He also spoke about the weight he feels returning with a different role in the locker room. "I'm not coming back the way I did years ago, now I have a different role and I hope to live up to it, I'm going to work to make that happen. It's still the same family from when I left, and that makes me very happy," Huerta said about reuniting with the club that developed him.

For now, the fans will have to wait a little longer to see him in the university jersey. The clash with Chivas at Estadio Akron stands as the marked date on the calendar for his long awaited debut, as long as the 'Chino's' back responds the way everyone at Pumas is hoping.
