Champions League 2026-27 Reunites Mourinho With Inter, Stirs 41-Year-Old Ghosts Between Atletico and Bayern
The league phase draw also pits Atletico against Bayern 41 years after their 1974 final, and brings Luis Enrique back to face Barcelona.
Forty-one years after that endless night in Brussels, Atletico Madrid will cross paths with Bayern Munich again in a league phase that seems written to stir up old memories. The Champions League 2026-27 draw did not just hand out opponents, it reunited coaches with their past, players with their former clubs, and wounds that have stayed open for half a century.
The most striking case is Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coach, now in charge of Real Madrid, will meet Inter again, the club he led to the treble of league, cup and Champions League in 2010. On the other side will be Cristian Chivu, the former Inter defender who now manages the Italian side. The matchup also revives the 1964 final, when Helenio Herrera's Inter beat Di Stefano and Puskas's Real Madrid 3-1 in Vienna, the last dance for the Blond Arrow in the white shirt.
Real Madrid will also visit Arsenal, an opponent that has had its measure like few others: Madrid has never beaten the Gunners in four official meetings. There is the memory of Thierry Henry's goal at the Bernabeu in 2006, and also the 6-1 aggregate by which the English side eliminated Los Blancos in last season's quarterfinals.
Barcelona, Between Rodri, Luis Enrique and Ferran
Barcelona will have two dates loaded with familiar names. Against Manchester City, Rodri will reappear, the midfielder who left the English club after seven seasons and fourteen titles, including the goal that gave City its only Champions League title, in 2023. The Manchester side will also arrive without Pep Guardiola for the first time in a decade: Enzo Maresca, his former assistant, is now in charge.
The other matchup touches even deeper nerves. Luis Enrique will face Barcelona again, the club with which he won the 2015 treble and orchestrated the 6-1 comeback at Camp Nou after the 4-0 defeat suffered in Paris in 2017. This time he will be on the bench for PSG, champions of the last two editions, and alongside him will be Ferran Torres, who will no longer see his former teammates from the same side of the pitch.
Atletico and Its Pending Date With 1974
Few matchups carry as much weight as Atletico-Bayern. In the 1974 final, Luis Aragones put the Rojiblancos ahead in the 114th minute, but Georg Schwarzenbeck equalized with a long-range shot in the final second of extra time. Penalty shootouts did not exist yet, so a replay was played two days later: Bayern won 4-0 and claimed the first of its six European Cups. Atletico, who later lost the 2014 and 2016 finals to Real Madrid, still does not have that title.
The memory of 2016 at least offers some comfort: Atletico eliminated Bayern in that season's semifinals on the away goals rule. Ten years later, Julian Alvarez and Harry Kane, barring any last-minute transfer market moves, will write a new chapter between two teams that both reached the semifinals last season.
The schedule will also take Atletico to Anfield, where in 2020 they eliminated defending champion Liverpool after extra time, though that team barely exists anymore: Salah and Slot both departed this summer and Andoni Iraola is now in charge. Atletico will also host Manchester United, whom they eliminated in 2022 with a goal from Renan Lodi at Old Trafford, now managed by Michael Carrick.
From '65 to the Miracle of '99
Inter and Liverpool will revisit the 1965 semifinal, when the English side won 3-1 at Anfield but Inter came back with a 3-0 win at San Siro to claim their second consecutive European Cup. Six decades later, Chivu and Iraola will sit in the dugouts of two clubs that combine for nine continental titles between them.
Bayern, besides facing Atletico, will also run into Arsenal and Manchester United. Against the north London side, they will revisit that 10-2 aggregate from the 2017 round of 16, with Harry Kane returning as an old enemy after his years at Tottenham, and with Mikel Arteta and Vincent Kompany, two products of the Guardiola coaching tree, facing off on the sidelines.
And against United, one of the most memorable finals in history will resurface: the 1999 final, when Bayern was leading 1-0 at Camp Nou until Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored in stoppage time to give United the European Cup. More than a quarter century later, Kane will captain a Bayern side that will face Carrick, a European champion with United in 2008 and now the manager at Old Trafford.
The league phase has not decided anything yet. But before handing out points, it already made sure to hand out memories.
