Barcelona and Real Madrid Pull Off Comebacks, City Sinks Against PSG, United Still Can't Find the Bottom

Matchday 2 of the Champions League produced 78 goals in 18 matches, with comeback wins for Barcelona and Real Madrid, a PSG rout of City, and Manchester United's crisis laid bare.

Seventy-eight goals in eighteen matches. Grab a calculator: that works out to an average of 4.33 goals per game across Matchday 2 of the Champions League, a round that offered everything except boredom. Liverpool and Aston Villa ran riot, Manchester City were humbled at home by PSG, Barcelona and Real Madrid came from behind on the road for dramatic wins, and Bayern Munich had to sweat out a 3-3 draw against a Viking side that made life far harder than expected. There's a lot to unpack, so let's get into it.

A Manchester United Side Still Looking for the Bottom

United conceded in the first minute away at Atletico Madrid and things didn't get better from there: they fell 2-0, and to make matters worse, Lisandro Martinez came out after the match and publicly questioned the front office's work, with Jason Wilcox bearing the brunt of the criticism. The whole club looks like a mess, top to bottom, and head coach Michael Carrick is feeling the heat.

Does he have room to turn things around? Everything suggests the club's decision-makers don't have a clear replacement lined up, with names like Kieran McKenna, Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann floated, so there's no obvious reason to make a change in the dugout right now. The problem, by most accounts, runs deeper than the starting eleven: of all the summer signings, only Carlos Baleba looks like a genuine upgrade on last season's squad. United still lack cover at left back and a forward who can guarantee 20 goals a season. If results don't improve soon, it wouldn't be a shock to see the club look for a sacrificial lamb to calm things down, though the root of the problem, as the thinking goes, lies at the top of the club and not just on the bench or the pitch.

Barcelona Keeps Its Foot on the Gas

Barcelona showed their best side once again, coming from behind on the road to rout Galatasaray 4-1 at the fabled Ali Sami Yen. Falling behind early didn't rattle them one bit. Lamine Yamal was once again the headline act, setting up two gorgeous assists: a pinpoint cross for Fermin Lopez's goal and a dribbling run that left Eren Elmali on the ground before he squared it for Anthony Gordon.

"We're playing against players who know each other inside out. They're like a complete machine."Okan Buruk

That's how Galatasaray's coach summed it up, and he wasn't wrong. Hansi Flick's side have now scored 43 goals in 10 matches this season, a number that borders on absurd. But there's an underlying worry: Yamal has started 13 matches between club and country over the last seven weeks, and with Raphinha injured, Flick doesn't seem inclined to give him a rest. The coming weeks will be the real test: a trip to Betis, then PSG at the Parc des Princes, and finally a Clasico against Real Madrid on October 25.

PSG and a Shadow Cast Over Manchester City

PSG raced out to a 3-0 lead in Manchester and cruised to victory, leaving City looking like an ordinary side. Still, one number stands out: City actually won the expected goals battle by a commanding 2.57 to 1.05, suggesting the scoreline owed as much to Parisian efficiency, with Gianluigi Donnarumma a standout between the posts, as it did to City's own individual errors.

Luis Enrique can afford to manage Ligue 1 at a measured pace, knowing his team always shows up when spring rolls around. Ousmane Dembele, rested over the weekend, came on against City and delivered a goal and an assist in 76 minutes. Next week's clash with Barcelona in Paris looks set to be the marquee fixture of the entire league phase.

Mourinho's Comeback in Rome

Few saw this one coming: Real Madrid trailed 3-1 at Roma and ended up winning 4-3, with the decisive goals arriving between the 83rd and 90th minutes. Endrick, who had a goal and an assist, and Arda Guler, who set up two goals, came off the bench around the hour mark and flipped the match completely.

The uncomfortable detail for Madrid is that it was the substitutes who decided the game, while big names like Vinicius Junior, subbed off at halftime and still without a club goal in eight matches, continue to search for their best form. The Brazilian was also sent off over the weekend against Villarreal for pulling an opponent's hair and will now miss four league matches. Mbappe found the net again, and Jude Bellingham keeps delivering, but questions about whether the team's biggest stars can coexist on the field remain unresolved.

Around the Rest of the Matchday

Aston Villa, who hadn't won at home all season, thrashed Fenerbahce 6-0 behind a brace from Nicolas Jackson and a goal plus an all-around strong showing from Johan Manzambi, with Ross Barkley also scoring twice and Tammy Abraham closing out the scoring.

Serie A, on the other hand, had a week to forget: Inter fell 4-3 at home to Club Brugge, with Nicolo Tresoldi scoring a hat trick, Napoli lost 3-1 at Villarreal, Como fell 3-2 to Feyenoord, and Roma collapsed against Madrid. Four Italian clubs, four losses, and 14 goals conceded in total.

And amid all the big names, there was still room for a surprise: Sabah, an Azerbaijani club founded only in 2017, picked up their first-ever Champions League win, beating Slavia Prague 2-0. A reminder that in this competition, even giants can stumble against clubs nobody saw coming.
