Charlotte edges D.C. United 1-2 despite being overwhelmed on shots

Thirty shots, five big chances and a ball that simply refused to go in. That's how anyone would sum up D.C. United's night at Audi Field, but the scoreboard tells a different story: 1-2 in favor of Charlotte FC, which won with just half the possession and a third of the shots. In MLS, sometimes the team that attacks the most isn't the one celebrating at the end.

Charlotte struck first through an unlikely route: a shot from outside the box. In the 21st minute, Ashley Westwood tried his luck with his right foot and the ball snuck in by the right post of the home goal. D.C. United had actually started the brighter of the two sides, with chances for Tai Baribo and Louis Munteanu, but went into halftime down 0-1.

The second half opened with an immediate response from the hosts: right after the restart, in the 46th minute, Lucas Bartlett headed home from close range off a Keisuke Kurokawa cross that came from a quickly taken free kick. It was 1-1, and the match blew wide open. D.C. United kept pushing through Munteanu, who rattled the crossbar twice, in the 74th minute and on an earlier play, while Peglow and Baribo tested from outside the area, but they lacked the final touch or simply ran into a sharp performance from Charlotte's goalkeeper.

Then came the blow that decided everything. In the 70th minute, Allan Saint-Maximin curled a left-footed finish from the left side of the box, cutting inside, to make it 1-2 off a Westwood assist. D.C. United pushed hard over the final twenty minutes and through a lengthy stoppage time of six minutes, but the equalizer never came.

The numbers behind a hollow dominance

The stat sheet paints one of those pictures that's hard to explain without having watched the game: the home side led nearly every offensive volume metric and still lost.

Based on those shots, our own estimate of expected goals generated in the match gives D.C. United 3.22 xG against just 0.87 for Charlotte. That's a massive gap for a result that ended up going the other way: Charlotte needed far less to do far more damage, with Westwood and Saint-Maximin settling things through individual quality that the home side's volume never translated into goals.

Our preview published ahead of the match gave Charlotte a 49% chance of winning, against 24% for D.C. United and 27% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.16 for the home side and 1.74 for the visitors, a combined total of 2.89. The final score, 1-2, lines up with the edge we gave Charlotte, though the match itself, with D.C. United's stark dominance in shots and chances, turned out to be far more even than that projection suggested.
