Charlotte FC makes Columbus Crew pay for wasted chances in commanding win

Charlotte FC picked up a 3-1 win over the Columbus Crew at Bank of America Stadium, but the scoreline tells only part of the story. The visitors dominated possession from start to finish and produced the bulk of the chances. A lightning-fast start in the opening minutes and a well-taken goal in the second half were enough for the home side to claim all three points in MLS play, despite being outplayed by nearly every measure.

A blistering start that decided the game

Charlotte didn't even need a minute to go ahead: right at kickoff, Brandt Bronico finished with his left foot from close range after a David Schnegg through ball, making it 1-0. The stats reflect an overwhelming Columbus Crew performance in terms of control, with the Crew holding 69.9% possession and firing 26 shots to Charlotte's 9, while also piling up 13 corners to just one for the home side. Charlotte, though, was far more clinical, putting 7 shots on target compared to just 4 for the visitors, the difference that ultimately swung the result.

The in-house xG estimate for the match backs up that reading: Columbus generated 2.496 expected goals to Charlotte's 1.5, a sign that the Crew's attacking output was greater, even if it wasn't enough to flip the result.

For the home side, the efficiency of their first two plays and Biel's strike in the second half were enough to secure a win that, based on how the match actually unfolded, could have been far more even than the final score suggests.
