Charlotte FC makes Columbus Crew pay for wasted chances in commanding win
The home side rode a blistering start to victory despite being outplayed for most of the match.

Charlotte FC picked up a 3-1 win over the Columbus Crew at Bank of America Stadium, but the scoreline tells only part of the story. The visitors dominated possession from start to finish and produced the bulk of the chances. A lightning-fast start in the opening minutes and a well-taken goal in the second half were enough for the home side to claim all three points in MLS play, despite being outplayed by nearly every measure.
A blistering start that decided the game
Charlotte didn't even need a minute to go ahead: right at kickoff, Brandt Bronico finished with his left foot from close range after a David Schnegg through ball, making it 1-0. The psychological blow deepened in the 8th minute, when Liel Abada converted a penalty, awarded after Dylan Chambost fouled Abada himself, for a 2-0 lead. In barely eight minutes, the home side had all but settled the match without needing to see much of the ball.
Columbus grew into the game as the minutes passed and steadily cut into Charlotte's control of play, though it took time to turn that into a goal. It finally came just before halftime: in the 40th minute, Chase Adams headed home from close range to make it 2-1, a goal that arrived after mounting pressure that had already been building through corners and shots from the visitors. The first half ended with that slim lead for Charlotte, which had done the most important work in the opening minutes.
The second half was an almost constant Columbus siege, with the Crew piling up corners, blocked shots and attacking sequences without finding the equalizer. Charlotte's resistance paid off in the 72nd minute, when Pep Biel curled home a left-footed finish from the center of the box, set up by Rodolfo Aloko, to make it 3-1. Despite later attempts from Josef Martínez, Brais Méndez and Taha Habroune, the Crew couldn't pull another goal back and the score held.
The numbers tell a different story
The stats reflect an overwhelming Columbus Crew performance in terms of control, with the Crew holding 69.9% possession and firing 26 shots to Charlotte's 9, while also piling up 13 corners to just one for the home side. Charlotte, though, was far more clinical, putting 7 shots on target compared to just 4 for the visitors, the difference that ultimately swung the result.
| Stat | Charlotte FC | Columbus Crew |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 30.1 | 69.9 |
| Shots | 9 | 26 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 4 |
| Corners | 1 | 13 |
| Passes | 313 | 722 |
| Fouls committed | 9 | 9 |
The in-house xG estimate for the match backs up that reading: Columbus generated 2.496 expected goals to Charlotte's 1.5, a sign that the Crew's attacking output was greater, even if it wasn't enough to flip the result.
What the preview said
The projection published ahead of the match gave Charlotte a 53% chance of winning, against a 24% chance of a draw and a 23% chance of a Columbus win, with expected goals of 2.06 for the home side and 1.33 for the Crew. The final score ended up matching that lean toward Charlotte, though how the game actually played out, with Columbus clearly dominating possession and shots, contrasted sharply with what those expected-goals numbers suggested for each side.
What the result means
Charlotte FC moves up to 28 points in the East standings, while Columbus Crew sits at 20 points, leaving an 8-point gap between the two clubs in the table. For the home side, the efficiency of their first two plays and Biel's strike in the second half were enough to secure a win that, based on how the match actually unfolded, could have been far more even than the final score suggests.
