Sources confirmed the details to ESPN, and the figure is no coincidence: it's roughly what the Blues themselves paid for the Argentine a little over two years ago.

The story started heating up in March, when Fernandez hinted at a desire to wear Real Madrid white. That comment cost him a fine and an internal suspension at his club, and it also prompted a statement from Madrid ruling out any move. Did that end the Spanish giants' interest? Not necessarily. Sources say Mourinho remains an outspoken admirer of the midfielder, and it remains to be seen whether Chelsea's ultimatum pushes the Spanish club to reconsider its stance in the coming hours.

Chelsea's side frames the move as a logical step: they say interested parties already had 60 days to submit a formal offer. The window for speculation is closing just as the Premier League season kicks off. And on that front, the club best positioned isn't Madrid, it's Manchester City.

Why City Has the Edge

The connection with Enzo Maresca carries real weight, and quite a bit of it. The Italian manager shared a locker room in London with Fernandez between 2024 and 2026, and that mutual trust works in favor of a possible move to the Etihad. City also has a clear path to financing the deal if it completes Rodri's move to Barcelona, though that negotiation is still unresolved: the Catalan club has already turned down two offers for the Spaniard, so nothing is settled.

So far, no club has put a formal offer on the table for the 120 million pounds Chelsea is asking, a figure ESPN first reported back on May 29 and one meant to clearly top the 107 million pounds paid for the player in February 2023. Fernandez's own agent, Javier Pastore, admitted in July that they were "looking at options to leave Chelsea," but that was weeks ago, and the market still hasn't moved in earnest.

While all this gets sorted out, Xabi Alonso is working as if Fernandez will be staying.
