Chelsea host Luton Town in Carabao Cup as Xabi Alonso plays without European distractions

With no Champions League or Europa League on the schedule, Xabi Alonso has a clear message for the Chelsea locker room: the Carabao Cup is no longer a filler competition. This Thursday the Blues host Luton Town, a third-tier English side, at Stamford Bridge, and logic suggests there shouldn't be any surprises. But soccer, and domestic cups especially, have a habit of making life difficult for favorites.

The matchup is for the second round of the tournament and kicks off this Thursday, August 27, at 3:30 p.m. (Argentina and Uruguay time), 2:30 p.m. in Chile and 1:30 p.m. in Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. For South American audiences, the broadcast will be available through Disney+'s Premium Plan.

A different kind of obligation this season

The fact that Chelsea has no European competition to play this season changes the priority map. Alonso knows it, and that's why he doesn't plan to give anything away in the domestic cup: with no midweek continental fixtures, the deep squad needs to be put to use to genuinely compete in the Carabao Cup as well. Against Luton, the Spanish coach has plenty of room to rotate without sacrificing competitiveness, something that in other years would have been harder to manage given the wear and tear of European football.

Robert Sanchez is expected to start in goal for the Londoners, with Tosin Adarabioyo and Jorrel Hato as the defensive pieces. In midfield, everything runs through Moises Caicedo, while up front the attacking trio promises fireworks: Cole Palmer, Estevao and Joao Pedro.

On the other side, Luton arrives with Josh Keeley between the posts and a defense led by George Johnston and Jake Richards. Going forward, Kasey Palmer is the reference point in midfield, joined by Emilio Lawrence and Gideon Kodua further up.

How both teams arrive

Chelsea comes into this matchup off a thrilling league opener: a 3-2 win over Fulham on the first matchday of the Premier League, a game that left good offensive impressions but also some defensive issues to fix. Luton, meanwhile, comes off a draw against Notts County in the second round of League One action, a more modest start befitting their level.

The most recent meeting between the two clearly favors the Blues: in the 2023/2024 Premier League season, on December 30, 2023, Chelsea won 3-2 with a brace from Cole Palmer and a goal from Noni Madueke, while Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo pulled goals back for the then-newly promoted Hatters.

With that recent history behind them and an obvious gap in level, Chelsea goes in as the heavy favorite to reach the next round. The question isn't so much whether they'll advance, but by what margin, and which new faces seize the opportunity to earn a spot in Alonso's plans.
