Christian Cueva opens up on Yotún clash: the stomp, the shove and the line that says it all

A ball left sitting for a beat too long, a stomp, a shove and a captain stepping in to defend his teammate. That's all it takes for tempers to flare on the field. That's exactly what happened between Christian Cueva and Yoshimar Yotún during the matchup between Sport Boys and Sporting Cristal, a game that ended in a win for the pink squad and moves them closer to their goals in the Torneo Clausura.

The clash grabbed all the headlines that day, but days later it was Cueva himself who sat down to walk through, in detail, how it all went down. He did so on the podcast Fuera de Juego, and the explanation starts with a play that looks harmless enough: a clearance from Mathías Llontop that he brings down with his chest.

"There's a ball that Llontop clears and I bring it down. I think coach Mosquera was right there... He plays it back to me and I control it, but I leave it sitting there," Cueva said. That moment, leaving the ball still for an extra second, was read by the opponent as a taunt. And that's when things started heating up.

According to Cueva himself, a Cristal player identified as Sosa took the play as a provocation. What followed came almost in a chain reaction: a stomp, Cueva squaring up to his rival, and then Yotún, Cristal's captain, arriving to shove him. That's when Cueva fired back with a line that sums up pretty well the back and forth they had on the field.

A hug that says more than the fight

What's curious is that all that tension, which at the time looked like it might boil over into a brawl, disappeared the moment the final whistle blew. Cueva and Yotún, who have known each other for years and shared time together on the national team, ended up hugging like nothing had happened. And during the podcast conversation, Cueva didn't hold back on praise for his friend, especially given what it meant to see him back on the field after an injury that kept him out for more than a year.

"It made me happy to see 'Yoshi' and to face a Cristal team that a lot of people talk about these days because of their form, but it's still Cristal, an important team, a big club. They have some very important players and a good squad. 'Yoshi' is the backbone of that team, after the tough stretch he went through with his injury. It's not fair," Cueva said, referring to the criticism Sporting Cristal has faced for their inconsistency in the 2026 season.

In the end, it was clear that what happened on the field was just that: soccer, heat of the moment, and the unwritten codes players share with each other. Nothing a hug at the final whistle couldn't settle.
