Cienciano storms back to knock out Lanus, reaches Sudamericana round of 16

The Peruvian club returns to the round of 16 of the tournament that made it champion in 2003, and will now face Botafogo as it chases a second continental crown.

There's a number that explains why all of Cusco is looking at its team differently these days: six. That's how many times Cienciano has taken part in the Copa Sudamericana, and in this latest edition it pulled off another shock that's already being talked about as a feat for the ages. It eliminated Lanus in the playoff round with a comeback that will live long in the club's memory, and now it's through to the round of 16 of the tournament that once crowned it champion.

Because that's what this story is really about: a club that has never let go of the memory of 2003, the year it won the Sudamericana in its first serious run in continental competition. That achievement remains the standard every time Cienciano pokes its head into international play, and in 2026 the club is dreaming of doing it again.

A history of ups and downs

The road after that title was anything but smooth. In 2004, as defending champion, Cienciano fell in the round of 16 to Liga de Quito. Five years later, in 2009, Liverpool of Uruguay shut the door on them already in the first phase. Then came a long dry spell: Cienciano didn't return to the tournament until 2023, when Universitario knocked them out in the preliminary round.

Last season, in 2025, the club from Cusco took a real step forward, reaching the round of 16 before Bolivar ended their run. Before that, in the group stage, they'd pulled off something far from easy: finishing above Atletico Mineiro, a side that plays in an entirely different league on the continent.

That recent history helps explain where things stand now. Cienciano is, at this moment, the only Peruvian club still alive in international competition, no small thing given how demanding the Sudamericana is from one round to the next.

The present: playoffs, Lanus and Botafogo

This year the club finished second in Group B of the Sudamericana, which forced it into a playoff round before reaching the round of 16. Waiting there was Lanus, a club with a real name in South American soccer, and Cienciano answered with a comeback many are already ranking among the biggest moments in its recent history. It wasn't a formality, and it wasn't just a one-off surprise either: it was a result earned through sheer character.

With that spot locked in, the draw paired Cienciano with Botafogo in the round of 16. The Brazilian side arrives with plenty of pedigree, but Cienciano has already shown in this same edition that big names don't rattle it. The dream, as always, is the same one: to get as close as possible to repeating 2003, the run that turned a club from the Peruvian interior into continental champion and a permanent reference point in Peruvian soccer.
