Club Brugge Strikes Twice in Two Minutes to Sink Lens in Champions League

Despite being outplayed for long stretches, Club Brugge pounced on a lethal start to the second half to beat Lens 3-0 in the Champions League.

Club Brugge Strikes Twice in Two Minutes to Sink Lens in Champions League

It took Club Brugge just two minutes to settle a match that was still very much up for grabs at halftime. With the scoreboard barely showing 1-0, Hans Vanaken doubled the lead in the 49th minute and Lens, who had been the sharper side for much of the first 45 minutes, ran out of answers. The final score, 3-0, hands Club Brugge a solid three points at Jan Breydel Stadium in the Champions League.

What's striking is that the scoreline didn't match the story of the first half. Lens created the clearer chances: Franjo Ivanovic rattled the post with a shot in the 12th minute off a Thorgan Hazard assist, and Hazard, Ruben Aguilar and Junior Kadile all had their own looks at putting the French side ahead. Club Brugge, though, weathered the storm and struck right before the break: in the 45th minute plus two, Nicolò Tresoldi tested the keeper with a shot that was saved, but the rebound fell perfectly to set up the opener right at the start of the second half.

The stretch that decided it all

The second half kicked off and the game flipped on its head within seconds. In the 47th minute, Hans Vanaken finished with his left foot from close range off a corner kick to make it 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Joaquin Seys, also with his left foot, slotted one in by the left post for 2-0. Lens, who up to that point had been the better side in terms of chances created, were visibly shaken, and Club Brugge took advantage to manage the rest of the match.

The third goal came in the 71st minute: Carlos Forbs, assisted by Hugo Vetlesen, who had just come on, finished with his left foot from the center of the box to seal it at 3-0. Lens tried to respond with substitutions, bringing on Odsonne Édouard, Florian Thauvin and Jean-Clair Todibo among others, and had more presence in the final minutes, but they couldn't find a way through.

The numbers behind the match

The stats tell a different story than the scoreline: Lens was the more persistent attacking side, though Club Brugge controlled more of the ball.

Shots on target57

That gap also shows up in the post-match xG calculated from the shots taken: 2.898 for Club Brugge against 3.175 for Lens. In other words, based on the volume of chances created, the French side arguably deserved more than what the final score reflected, but Belgian efficiency in those two minutes at the start of the second half ended up being the deciding factor.

Heading into the match, our model's projection gave Club Brugge a 51% chance of winning, compared to 26% for Lens and 23% for a draw, with expected goals of 2.08 for the home side and 1.47 for the visitors. The final result ended up more lopsided on the scoreboard than expected, even though the balance of chances on the field was closer than the 3-0 scoreline suggests.

What it means in the standings

With this result, Club Brugge sits in 11th place in the group stage, with 6 points from 3 matches played (2 wins and 1 loss). Lens, meanwhile, remains in 27th place, also with 3 matches played but with just 1 win and 2 losses, for 3 points total. The gap between the two sides in the standings stands at 3 points. For Lens, who had shown a dangerous attacking side for much of the match, the psychological blow of those two goals at the start of the second half weighed more heavily than any stat on possession or shots.
