Colo Colo controlled the game but couldn't turn dominance into goals against Deportes Concepcion

Fernando Ortiz acknowledged his team's lack of finishing at home and admitted a costly set piece goal stemmed from his own game plan falling short.

Colo Colo controlled the game but couldn't turn dominance into goals against Deportes Concepcion

Colo Colo had the ball, had the chances, and had, above all, the feeling that the match was slipping away because of its own shortcomings. The 1-1 draw against Deportes Concepcion at Estadio Monumental left a familiar picture for the club faithful: plenty of possession, plenty of buildup, but zero cutting edge when it mattered most.

Fernando Ortiz's side controlled the ball and created chances, yet failed to turn that superiority into a result. That's the explanation behind a draw that feels like a missed opportunity at home. And the Argentine coach, far from making excuses, stepped up to take responsibility.

Without enough clarity at the right moments and in the right spots, and with small details like the set piece, which we knew was one of their weapons that could cause us trouble, it added up. We need to turn the page quickly and focus on what's next, get to work tomorrow and fix things.Fernando Ortiz

Because that's another key point: Deportes Concepcion's goal came from a set piece, exactly the weapon Ortiz admitted they feared. They saw it coming and couldn't stop it.

Respect for the opponent's game plan

Ortiz didn't hide his admiration for the work of Fernando Diaz, the visiting team's coach, who set his side up with discipline and patience at the Monumental.

"Fer" (Diaz) is an excellent coach, backed by his track record, not just at Concepcion but throughout our soccer. These are ways of approaching a match, and it's respectable. The problem is on us to solve it.Fernando Ortiz

He went a bit further, admitting this isn't the first time Colo Colo has run into the same issue at home against opponents who sit back. "We know this is something historic, that every team that has come to our home has done the same thing, but it's on us. Credit to the opponent, it's a game plan, it works for them, but the problem is on us," the coach explained, putting the focus on his own team's lack of efficiency rather than the opponent's merits.

Key absences and uncertainty in goal

Colo Colo went into this match without several important players. Ortiz went over the absences of Javier Correa, Arturo Vidal, and Joaquin Sosa, making clear that missing those names carries weight, though he praised the performance of those who were available: "They're important players because they're part of the squad. But whoever gets the chance and the opportunity to play did it the right way."

Another topic that raised questions was the situation of goalkeeper Gabriel Maureira, who felt discomfort in training the day before. Ortiz preferred not to speculate on a diagnosis: "I've only talked about his pain, he's told me he's in pain. The doctors will speak more specifically about what happened, and I don't know what might come of it. I can't say anything for certain that my words might later be held against me for."

That absence opened the door for Cape Verdean goalkeeper Vozinha, whose performance was also brought up with the coach. His response was measured: "He only had three situations, not enough to judge or do a deep analysis. He wasn't really tested again, I'd have to look at it, but he'll have to compete again. He'll head off with his national team, and we'll see how he comes back," Ortiz concluded, leaving the door open for the goalkeeper to keep getting minutes once he returns from his commitment with Cape Verde.
