Colo Colo Rout Audax Italiano 5-1, Stretch Lead in Title Race

Fourteen minutes. That's all it took for Colo Colo to break the deadlock and set the tone for a night that would end in a full-blown party at the Monumental. With a resounding 5-1 win over Audax Italiano, El Cacique didn't just pick up three more points, it stretched a lead that's starting to look like a highway straight to star number 35.

The opening goal came from a mistake in Audax's build-up play that Víctor Felipe Méndez made them pay for: he won the ball, laid it off to Javier Correa, and the center forward finished low and across goal, giving Tomás Ahumada no chance. The Monumental David Arellano erupted, and the match, barely underway, already smelled like a rout.

Audax didn't fold, though. In the 27th minute, Diego Coelho rattled the crossbar with Gabriel Maureira already beaten, a reminder that the visitors had something to offer too. But their own mistakes came back to bite them: in the 30th minute, a Mario Sandoval back-pass was picked off by Correa, who squared it for Lautaro Pastrán. Enzo Ferrario saved the first shot, but Pastrán buried the rebound to make it 2-0.

A Match That Never Fully Settled

Just when it looked like El Cacique had things under control, the Tanos answered back. In the 33rd minute, Giovani Chiaverano turned with his back to goal and, with a left-footed touch worth watching on repeat, left Jeyson Rojas frozen and Maureira with no chance. The 2-1 injected tension into a stadium that had been celebrating calmly just moments before.

In the second half, Álvaro Madrid tried his luck in the 48th minute but ran into the visiting defense's resistance. Audax kept causing trouble, even giving their fans a scare in the 52nd minute after a Maureira mistake, though the home goalkeeper redeemed himself a minute later with a double save that included a Coelho shot cleared almost off the line.

The blow that tipped the scales came in the 60th minute: Madrid set up Leandro Hernández with a subtle touch, and he finished with class to make it 3-1. Audax struggled to respond, and Colo Colo took it as a green light to finish the job.

And finish it they did. In the 78th minute, Correa drove in from the left, left more than one defender in his wake, and unleashed a shot with an impossible curve past Ahumada: 4-1 and a genuine highlight-reel goal. Just three minutes later, in the 81st minute, another Colo Colo combination found its way to Hernández, who netted his second of the night to make it 5-1 at the final whistle.

With the rout, Colo Colo climbed to 52 points and widened its lead over Universidad de Chile to 16 points, after the Blues fell 2-1 to Universidad de Concepción at the Ester Roa Rebolledo. At this stage of the tournament, that gap is starting to speak for itself.
