Aaronson's Penalty Lifts Colorado Rapids Past CF Montreal at Dick's Sporting Goods Park
The home side dominated the MLS matchup and took the win thanks to Aaronson's penalty conversion right before halftime.
A penalty converted by Paxten Aaronson right at the edge of halftime was enough for the Colorado Rapids to secure a narrow 1-0 win over CF Montreal at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. In an MLS matchup that the home side controlled for the most part, the lone goal reflected more of a gap in chance creation than an easy night, since Montreal pushed until the final whistle without finding an equalizer.
The hosts came out firing from the opening whistle with more possession and more presence in the attacking third. Even before the goal, they had already given warning signs: a shot from Georgi Minoungou that flew just wide and a header from Rob Holding that crashed off the crossbar in the 39th minute, following a cross from Keegan Rosenberry. The visitors, for their part, were not far behind in the opening stretch, as Viktor Radojevic and Prince Owusu tested the Rapids' goal with shots that Sebastian Breza and the frame handled without much trouble.
The play that decided the match came in the 40th minute: Donavan Phillip was fouled inside the box by Radojevic, and the referee pointed to the spot for Colorado. Two minutes later, Aaronson made no mistake from twelve yards, slotting a low shot to the goalkeeper's right to make it 1-0. That goal, combined with the territorial dominance the Rapids had already been showing, set the tone for the rest of the match.
A Second Half of Pressure Without a Payoff
The second half brought a change in tempo but not in script. Montreal turned to the bench early, bringing on Alexis Sanchez, Luca Petrasso and Daniel Rios to freshen up the attack, and Dante Sealy emerged as their most dangerous outlet. He tested the Rapids' goalkeeper on several occasions, including a long-range effort in the 86th minute, but always found an answer from the opposing keeper. On the other side, the Rapids also made changes, bringing on Morgan Whittaker, Sayed Abu Farhi and Wayne Frederick, and kept generating danger, with shots from Whittaker, Frederick and Aaronson himself that failed to add a second goal but kept Montreal pinned back.
Yellow cards for Sealy, Kosi Thompson and Wayne Frederick in the closing stretch hinted at a tense finish, but the scoreline held firm despite stoppage time in both halves.
The Numbers Back Up the Home Side's Dominance
The stats confirm what was visible on the field: the Rapids controlled possession, created more chances and were sharper in front of goal.
| Stat | Colorado Rapids | CF Montreal |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 58.5 | 41.5 |
| Shots | 18 | 11 |
| Shots on Target | 7 | 5 |
| Big Chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 5 | 1 |
| Passes | 551 | 386 |
| Fouls Committed | 13 | 11 |
The expected goals tally, calculated after the fact based on shot locations, also tilts in the home side's favor: 2.68 compared to Montreal's 0.97, a gap that confirms Colorado not only controlled the ball but also created more genuine danger inside the opposing box.
The final result, though, was not far off from what had been projected before kickoff. Our preview gave Colorado a 49% chance of winning, with 28% for a draw and 23% for a Montreal win, alongside expected goals of 1.59 for the Rapids and 1.04 for Montreal. The final scoreline, decided by a single goal, ended up tighter than the statistical edge shown on the field would have suggested.
With this result, CF Montreal remains 15th in the Eastern Conference with 21 points from 25 matches played (5 wins, 6 draws and 14 losses), a campaign that continues to take a toll on their standing. For the Rapids, meanwhile, the win comes backed by a clear command of play that, this time, was enough to secure all three points thanks to their efficiency from the penalty spot.
