Colorado Rapids Let Slip a Win as Minnesota United Draw 2-2 on Own Goal

Colorado Rapids Let Slip a Win as Minnesota United Draw 2-2 on Own Goal

Colorado Rapids went ahead twice at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, and twice Minnesota United spoiled the party. In the end it finished 2-2, a scoreline that leaves more questions than certainties, especially given the home side played a man down for a big chunk of the second half. In the MLS Western Conference, the result splits a point between the two sides and leaves the sense of an opportunity Colorado let get away.

The match opened with Colorado controlling the ball and creating chances without finding the breakthrough, until it arrived right before halftime. In the 45th minute, Darren Yapi finished with his right foot from the center of the box after a Keegan Rosenberry cross, sending the Rapids into the locker room with the lead. But that advantage didn't last long for the home side: just after the restart, in the 51st minute, Kelvin Yeboah equalized for Minnesota with a right-footed finish, also from the center of the box.

Things got even stranger from there. In the 66th minute, a VAR review overturned a red card shown to Sayed Abu Farhi, but the reprieve lasted all of one minute: in the 67th, Abu Farhi was sent off again, this time for fighting, and Colorado had to play the rest of the match with ten men. Far from folding, the Rapids found their second goal shortly after: in the 73rd minute, Georgi Minoungou, who had come on for the injured Yapi, finished from close range into the middle of the goal to make it 2-1.

An Unexpected Equalizer

With an extra man, Minnesota pushed in the closing minutes and found the equalizer in the 82nd, though not in the way the visitors would have wanted: an own goal by Loic Williams made it 2-2, which is how it stayed. The rest of the match, including the seven minutes of stoppage time signaled by the fourth official, wasn't enough for either side to find a winner.

The match stats reflect the control Colorado had, especially before going down to ten men:

According to our xG estimate based on the match's shots, Colorado generated 2.287 expected goals to Minnesota's 1.236, a gap that confirms the home side had the clearer chances to have won the match outright, red card or not.

Before kickoff, our projection gave Colorado a 39% chance of winning, 28% for the draw and 33% for Minnesota, with a total expected goals figure of 2.89. The final 2-2 scoreline ended up falling on the draw, the least likely of the three outcomes under that projection, though the total number of goals (four) did land close to what was anticipated.

In the Western Conference standings, this result leaves both clubs in the lower half of the table: Colorado Rapids sit ninth with 38 points, and Minnesota United are 13th with 31, a gap of 7 points between them. Neither side leaves the match better positioned than it entered, though both did add a point that could end up mattering in the fight for the rest of the season.

What this draw leaves behind is the picture of a Colorado side that had the match under control for long stretches, went ahead twice, and still couldn't hold onto the lead to the final whistle while playing almost half an hour with a man down. For Minnesota, the read is the opposite: a team that had to come from behind twice just to avoid defeat and still walked away with a point on the road despite spending most of the second half with a man advantage.
