Como bares its teeth in European debut, routs RB Leipzig at the Sinigaglia

Baturina and Diao scored in a dominant first half that Leipzig only partially slowed with a goal from Maksimovic.

Como bares its teeth in European debut, routs RB Leipzig at the Sinigaglia

Como didn't need even a quarter of an hour to signal that tonight at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia was not going to be a routine outing for RB Leipzig. Martin Baturina opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a low shot from the center of the box, and from there the Italian side never let up on the way to a resounding 4-1 win in the Champions League.

The second goal came before halftime: in the 37th minute, Baturina returned the favor with a through ball for Tasos Douvikas, who also finished low, right by the post, sending Como into the locker room with a 2-0 lead that fairly reflected what had happened on the field.

A second half of ups and downs

The second half opened with the same script. Just eight minutes after the restart, Assane Diao extended the lead with an assist from Nico Paz, making it 3-0 in the 53rd minute. The match appeared settled, but RB Leipzig responded almost immediately: four minutes later, Andrija Maksimovic pulled one back with a left-footed strike from outside the box that curled into the top corner, set up by Christopher Nkunku. The 3-1 brought some tension back into a match that had, up to that point, been a home-side monologue.

Leipzig pushed in the final stretch with several attacking substitutions and created some danger, but lacked the finishing touch: Ezechiel Banzuzi headed one off the crossbar and Antonio Nusa tried his luck several times without success. Como, for its part, settled any doubts in the 89th minute, when Máximo Perrone, who had come on from the bench, finished with his left foot after a through ball from Nico Paz to make it a final 4-1.

What the numbers say

Possession finished nearly even, but Como was far superior when it came to creating clear chances and finishing them off.

According to our xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Como generated 3.12 expected goals to RB Leipzig's 1.36, a gap that confirms the scoreline was no illusion: the Italian side was sharper and more clinical with the chances it created, even though both teams finished level at 14 shots overall.

What the preview projected

Ahead of the match, our projections pointed to a tight contest, with a 51% win probability for Como, 26% for a draw and 23% for RB Leipzig, along with total expected goals of 2.89 (1.77 for the home side and 1.12 for the visitors). The final result far exceeded that forecast: Como didn't just win, it won by a three-goal margin, well beyond what the model had calculated before kickoff.

What the result means in the standings

With this win, Como adds its tally to a group where several teams share the same points after matchday one, though it's worth remembering that with just one match played, the table still says little about each squad's real level. RB Leipzig, for its part, remains pointless after this defeat, in a competition where there is still a long way to go.

What is clear from tonight at the Sinigaglia is that Como was able to sustain a high offensive tempo for the full 90 minutes, with Nico Paz and Martin Baturina as constant creators of danger, while RB Leipzig, despite some individual flashes like Maksimovic's goal, never found a way to slow down its opponent's quick transitions.
