Cristian Romero unveiled as Atletico Madrid's newest signing after completing move from Tottenham
The Argentine defender has signed through 2031, becoming one of the club's most significant defensive additions of the season.

Five years, a Premier League title that slipped away by the narrowest of margins, and a captain's armband he wore with pride. All of that is now in the past for Cristian "Cuti" Romero, who was officially unveiled as a new Atletico Madrid player this Saturday. The Madrid club confirmed the arrival of the Argentine defender from Tottenham, closing out a deal that had been building for weeks and went through several twists before finally getting done.
The transfer was completed for roughly 40 million euros, a figure that was enough to convince Spurs to part ways with one of their most important players of the last five years. Romero arrived in England as a promising talent and left as an absolute leader: captain, fan favorite, and one of the most reliable defensive pieces in English football in recent seasons.
For the 28-year-old center back, this change of scenery comes at a good moment in his career. Having been a key figure for the Argentine national team, where he has chipped in with important goals in decisive moments, Cuti now takes on a new challenge in LaLiga with the goal of continuing to add trophies, something he already knows plenty about with the Albiceleste.
Atletico Madrid confirmed that Romero signed a contract through June 2031, a five-year deal that speaks to the long-term project the club has in mind for him. In its official statement, the club described him as an "experienced right-footed center back," highlighting his physical ability, his quickness in reading the game, and his commanding presence on the field.
Romero's arrival also carries an extra layer of intrigue behind the scenes: with Rodrigo De Paul... sorry, Molina, on his way out, and Julian Alvarez's future at the club still not fully settled, Cuti steps in to fill much of the Argentine void left open in the transfer market.
Romero has already passed his medical and trained for the first time with his new teammates. The coaching staff's plan is to have him available for LaLiga's second matchday, provided his physical conditioning allows it.
Right after signing, the defender spoke to the club's official channel and shared his first words as an Atletico player:
I'm very happy to join this huge club. I come in with the same mindset as always, to leave my name written into the club's history, and I know that comes from winning something. I'm going to give everything, right up to the last day, to get there.Cristian Romero
Romero also explained why he feels this move fits so well with his style of play:
This is a club that fits perfectly with the way I play. I know it's a wonderful club, and the people here also inspired me to come. I'm going to give my absolute best. After that, it's football, and it can go well or it can go badly, but I know I'll be 100 percent committed to the shirt. I can't wait to put it on and play.Cristian Romero
With this announcement, Atletico Madrid adds pedigree and international experience to its backline, and Romero begins a new chapter with the ambition of matching in Spain the level that made him captain in England.
