Croatia edges Czechia 1-2 in Nations League opener

Play had barely resumed at Fortuna Arena when Luka Modric curled a right-footed finish into the top corner to put Croatia ahead. Not even a minute had gone by since the restart. Czechia answered quickly, with Adam Karabec leveling things at the 53rd minute, but Croatia struck again through Marco Pasalic at the 76th minute and closed out a 1-2 win in a group-stage clash of the UEFA Nations League.

The first half had been a back-and-forth affair without goals, with Croatia setting the tone through Franjo Ivanovic and Igor Matanovic, who tested Matous Trmal on several occasions without success, while Czechia defended with discipline and rarely threatened going forward. Two minutes later, Czechia thought they had equalized again with a goal from Matej Radosta, but VAR disallowed it and the call was confirmed: no goal. There were no further scares after that, despite five minutes of stoppage time and a late attempt from Ante Budimir that was saved.
