Cruz Azul blows a two-goal lead, then salvages 3-3 draw against Toluca in stoppage time

La Máquina led 2-0 and later fell behind 2-3, but a Gabriel Fernández brace, including a 94th-minute goal, sealed a wild 3-3 draw against league leader Toluca.

Cruz Azul blows a two-goal lead, then salvages 3-3 draw against Toluca in stoppage time

Cruz Azul had the game wrapped up by the 37th minute. Up 2-0 and in comfortable control, the Estadio Banorte crowd could breathe easy. Yet in the end, they were celebrating a 3-3 draw in stoppage time, as though they'd come from behind rather than blown a two-goal cushion. That's how crazy this Liga MX matchup between Cruz Azul and Toluca turned out to be.

The opening stretch belonged entirely to La Máquina. In the 6th minute, Nicolás Ibáñez finished with his right foot from inside the box off a José Paradela assist to make it 1-0. Cruz Azul kept pressing, and in the 37th minute, Gabriel Fernández rose for a header to make it 2-0, with Ibáñez again providing the cross. That's how the teams went into the break, with the home side firmly in charge.

The second half flipped the script entirely. In the 51st minute, VAR reviewed a play inside the box and awarded Toluca a penalty. Helinho made no mistake from the spot in the 54th minute to make it 2-1, and just a minute later, in the 55th, Alexis Vega struck from outside the area to level it at 2-2. In a matter of seconds, what had been a comfortable cushion turned into a wide-open contest.

An emboldened Toluca completed the turnaround in the 77th minute: a counterattack led by Nicolás Castro ended with Vega finishing from the center of the box to make it 2-3. The visitors found themselves ahead late in the match, something that would have seemed unthinkable half an hour earlier.

But Cruz Azul refused to fold. Deep into stoppage time, in the 94th minute, a corner kick led to a cross from Andrés Montaño and a header from Gabriel Fernández, who thus notched his second goal of the night, for the final 3-3. The home side salvaged a point on the match's very last play.

What the numbers say

The stat sheet was even, which only underscores how wild the scoreline was.

As for the xG generated in the match (an in-house estimate calculated from the shots taken, not a prediction), Toluca finished ahead with 2.08 compared to Cruz Azul's 1.53, a reflection of how the visitors kept gaining offensive ground as the second half wore on, even when the scoreboard wasn't in their favor.

Our preview published ahead of the match gave Cruz Azul a 34% chance of winning, 27% for a draw and 39% for a Toluca victory, with an expected total of 2.93 goals. The final result, with six goals split between both sides and a draw on the board, ended up lining up fairly well with that forecast of a tight, goal-heavy match, even if the path to get there was far messier than any projection could have anticipated.

What the result means for the standings

Toluca came into the match as league leader with 20 points from 10 games played, built on 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Cruz Azul, meanwhile, sits in sixth place with 16 points from 10 games (5 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses), four points behind the Mexico State side. The draw hands a point to each team but doesn't change the big picture much: Toluca stays on top and Cruz Azul remains in the middle of the table, in a match that will be remembered more for its intensity than for its effect on the standings.

What remains is the image of a Cruz Azul side that let a two-goal lead slip away in barely 18 minutes, and a Toluca team that fought back to take the lead, only to watch Gabriel Fernández, who scored twice, snatch the three points away in the final gasp of the match.
