Curtis Jones completes move to Inter Milan for 35 million euros
The English midfielder leaves Liverpool after 17 years in the academy after telling the new manager of his intention to leave in search of more playing time.
Seventeen years is a long time. Curtis Jones joined Liverpool's academy at just nine years old, became a symbol of the club, and yet this week he packed his bags for Italy. The English midfielder completed his transfer to Inter Milan, the reigning Serie A champions, in a deal worth 35 million euros (about $40 million).
The agreement between the two clubs includes 30 million euros guaranteed plus another 5 million in add-ons tied to performance targets. Liverpool also secured a 10% sell-on clause on any future transfer, a standard safeguard when letting go of an academy product the club once expected to build around. Jones, 25, signed with the Italian side through 2031.
Jones's story at Anfield is no small thing. He made his first-team debut in 2019, still under Jürgen Klopp, and has since racked up 228 appearances in the red shirt, 49 of them last season across all competitions. The problem, and the reason behind this exit, lies in a far less comfortable number: of those recent appearances, only 18 came as a Premier League starter. Not much for a player raised at the club since childhood who saw himself with a bigger role.
A departure long in the making
Jones still had a year left on his contract, so this wasn't a move forced by financial need or a lack of options on the club's part. He left because he wanted to play, and he made that clear to newly arrived manager Andoni Iraola almost as soon as the coach set foot in the club. There was no beating around the bush: he told Iraola of his intention to leave almost immediately, the kind of move that tends to unsettle any manager who just walked through the door, but one that also shows just how firmly the midfielder had already made up his mind.
For Inter, signing Jones is a move built with the long term in mind: a six-year contract speaks to a project, not a quick fix for this season alone. Capable of playing centrally or drifting wide to open up the game, the Englishman joins a locker room that just claimed the Italian title and needs to inject young legs without losing the competitive edge that got it there.
It remains to be seen how long it takes him to adjust to a league as different in pace and tactical demands as Italy's. But the underlying message has already been sent: after a lifetime at Liverpool, Curtis Jones needed minutes, and he went looking for them in another country.
