Cuti Romero leaves Tottenham for Atletico Madrid in 40 million euro deal
The Argentine defender leaves London after five years and becomes Simeone's new center back.
Five years can bring a lot: lifting a Europa League trophy, wearing the captain's armband, and eventually watching the relationship with the front office fall apart. That's the short version of Cristian "Cuti" Romero's spell at Tottenham, a cycle that is now closing with a move to Spain.
Atletico Madrid reached an agreement with the London club to sign the defender from Cordoba, in a deal worth around 40 million euros (about 46 million dollars), according to ESPN. The structure of the transfer would include 35 million in fixed fees plus 5 million in variables, a common formula in this kind of negotiation when a 28 year old player still under contract is involved.
For Diego Simeone, this is no ordinary signing. El Cholo had been chasing Romero for a while, and not by accident: he loves center backs who don't give up a single yard, who fight for every ball like it's their last, and the Argentine fits that mold perfectly. What's new is that the market finally lined up with the wish.
A bittersweet goodbye in London
Romero joined Tottenham in 2021 and worked his way up until becoming the team's captain in his final season. The high point of his time in North London came in 2025, when the club lifted the Europa League, the Spurs' first trophy in 17 years. It was a huge moment for a fan base that had been waiting nearly two decades for something to celebrate.
But it wasn't all smooth sailing. The relationship between the defender and the club's leadership had been growing tense for the past two seasons, largely because of one specific episode: he was criticized for traveling to Argentina to recover from an injury right when the team was fighting to stay in the Premier League for the second year in a row. Tottenham, by then under Roberto de Zerbi, finished that campaign in 17th place out of 20 and managed to avoid relegation, but the episode left a mark internally.
Romero, in any case, recovered in time to not miss the biggest date on the calendar with the Argentina national team: he played in seven of the eight matches on the road to the 2026 World Cup final. It wasn't the first time he came through at the right moment: he was a key piece of the squad that was crowned world champion in 2022, as well as the Copa America winners in 2021 and 2024.
Now a new chapter begins, this time at the Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico adds a world class center back, hungry for titles and experienced on the biggest stages. It remains to be seen how long it takes him to win over a fan base that, like every club Simeone has coached, demands full effort from the very first minute.
