Dani Carvajal remains a free agent as France's Lille shows interest in signing him

Thirteen years, 27 trophies and a goodbye that still hasn't found its next chapter. Dani Carvajal remains without a club since he terminated his contract with Real Madrid, and now a potential destination is starting to take shape: France's Lille has shown interest in signing him, according to several sources who spoke to ESPN.

The Madrid born right back, 34, became a free agent this summer after closing out a stretch that began when he was a youth academy product and ended with him as one of the most decorated captains in the club's recent history. Since then he has drawn interest from several teams, though he hasn't given a firm yes to any of them yet.

Why Lille? It isn't just about filling a need at the position. Davide Ancelotti is on the French club's bench, and Carvajal shared a locker room with him in Madrid back when Davide was serving as an assistant to his father, Carlo Ancelotti. That prior relationship could carry real weight in his decision, especially for a player who places a high value on trusted environments after such a physically grueling season.

That's because Carvajal's last campaign at Real Madrid was marked by hardship. In October 2024 he suffered a serious injury, a triple tear in his right knee, that sidelined him for months. He later went under the knife again on the same knee, in a season that had started well but turned into a long grind to get back to his best form.

In fact, sources consulted by ESPN say Carvajal reached a strong physical level in the final weeks of competition, but he didn't have the trust of then head coach Alvaro Arbeloa. That detail helps explain why his departure from the Bernabeu, after so many years, ended up being almost silent.

A signing that makes footballing sense

For Lille, competing this season in the Champions League, adding a right back with Carvajal's international experience and defensive solidity makes complete sense. It isn't just about the resume: the French club needs players who already know what it takes to compete at that European level, and few players on the current market can offer that kind of background.

It remains to be seen whether the connection with Davide Ancelotti ends up being the deciding factor. Carvajal, meanwhile, continues weighing his options without rushing, aware that his next decision will mark the opening chapter of his career away from Real Madrid.
