David González says he could retire if he wins a title with América de Cali

Some coaches talk about their future with an eye on the next big European league or a call from the national team. David González did just the opposite. In the middle of a dream stretch with América de Cali, the coach sat down to talk about his plans and dropped something few people saw coming: he could retire soon if he manages to win a title with the team he currently has sitting atop the Liga BetPlay.

And it's not like La Mechita is struggling, quite the opposite. The start of the second half of the season under his command has been one of the best the club has had in recent memory, with results that carried it to the top of the table. With no international tournament to worry about this year, América is focused on two clear fronts through the end of 2025: the league and the Copa BetPlay. In both competitions, the team has looked solid, with a clear identity that carries the coach's signature.

In an interview with AS Colombia, González didn't hold back when asked about his personal goals. He was asked about coaching abroad, even the possibility of one day leading the Colombian national team, but he chose not to look that far ahead. He preferred to talk about the present and what it would mean to him, on a personal level, to win a title with América.

I have that goal of becoming champion, and it's like a goal I've set so I can say, "okay, I've taken the pressure off." And once I take that pressure off, I'm really going to sit down and ask myself: "Am I going to keep doing this or not?"David González

The comment hints at something that goes beyond soccer. González said there are other things in his life he wants to devote energy to, and that at some point those priorities and the daily grind of coaching might stop being compatible. It didn't sound like an immediate goodbye, but it did sound like an honest reflection from someone already thinking about what comes after the bench.

For now, the coach's message is clear: the priority is for the team to keep winning game by game. Everything else, he says, will sort itself out. Meanwhile, América de Cali keeps fighting near the top of the standings, chasing a title that, according to its own coach, could also end up closing a chapter.
