The Colombian goalkeeper, who played for Nacional, Nice, Arsenal, Napoli, Al-Nassr and the Colombian national team, explained that his body told him it was time to stop.

David Ospina Announces His Retirement From Professional Soccer With a Farewell Letter

It all started with a question on a neighborhood field: "Who wants to play goalkeeper?" David Ospina raised his hand. He didn't know, at that moment, that he had just defined the rest of his life. Decades later, that same person said goodbye to professional soccer with a letter that runs through, almost in one breath, everything he lived between the posts.

The Colombian goalkeeper announced his retirement from professional soccer through a message full of gratitude, in which he looked back on a career that took him through five clubs and the Colombian national team. He wore the jerseys of Atletico Nacional, Nice, Arsenal, Napoli and Al-Nassr, in addition to being a regular presence for years in goal for the Colombian national side.

There were no big announcements or press conferences in his farewell, just words. Ospina spoke of the smell of the grass, the stands, the roars after a goal, and something that probably only goalkeepers understand: the heartbeat that comes with standing between the posts. There, in that particular solitude of the six-yard box, he said a person grows differently and sees the game, and life, in another way.

He didn't forget anyone along the way. He thanked his father Hernan, his mother Lucia, his sister Daniela, Jessi (his life partner) and his children, Dulce and Maxi. He also had words for teammates, coaches, fans and every club that opened a door for him.

Why now? He answered that himself, plainly and without drama.

I'm not leaving because I want to. I'm doing it because I listen to my body, and it's talking to me.David Ospina

That line sums up the tone of the whole letter pretty well: there's no complaint or bitter nostalgia, just a decision made after personal reflection on his own physical condition. And he closes with an idea that, simple as it is, ends up being the most powerful part of the whole message.

I don't consider myself defeated, I consider myself grateful.David Ospina

Ospina describes his farewell as a beautiful journey, and leaves one last image worth sitting with: that of the boy who raised his hand on that neighborhood field, who, he says, will now know how to guide him in whatever comes next. "Don't worry. I'll go wherever the smile takes me," he wrote to close.

And so, with a letter rather than a club statement, one of the Colombian goalkeepers who traveled the farthest outside his country steps away from the goal, having played in leagues in France, England, Italy and Saudi Arabia, all while never stopping representing his national team.
