Defensa y Justicia Strikes Twice in Two Minutes to Beat Union Santa Fe 2-0
Goals from Gutierrez and Perez right before halftime gave Defensa y Justicia the win at Estadio 15 de Abril, even after playing a man down from the 75th minute following Sosa's red card.

It took Defensa y Justicia just two minutes to put the game away. Late in the first half, in the 42nd minute, Juan Gutierrez struck with his right foot from the center of the box off an assist from David Barbona. Not even 120 seconds later, Cesar Perez doubled the lead with another right-footed finish, this time set up by Gutierrez himself after a through ball. The teams went into the break at 0-2 at Estadio 15 de Abril, and that scoreline held up through the final whistle in this Argentina Primera Division matchup.
Union Santa Fe had actually started the brighter of the two sides: Joaquin Mosqueira, Ignacio Malcorra and Eric Ramirez all had early looks on goal, and the match stayed tight for much of the first half as both sides fired shots without finding the net. But the lightning one-two from Gutierrez and Perez flipped the script right before the break, and the home side never found a way back.
In the second half, Union Santa Fe turned to its bench in search of an answer: Brahian Cuello, Julian Palacios, Marcelo Estigarribia and later Misael Aguirre and Bruno Pitton all came on looking to pull one back. There were clear chances, including a Cuello header that grazed the post in the 55th minute and a couple of attempts from Ignacio Malcorra, but the visitors' goal held firm. Defensa y Justicia, for its part, had a moment to remember involving Santiago Sosa: in the 74th minute VAR overturned a red card shown to him, only for the referee to send him off again just a minute later, in the 75th. Despite playing a man short down the stretch, Julio Vaccari's side managed the lead without any serious scares, helped along by goalkeeper Tiziano Perrotta's saves in stoppage time.
What the numbers say
Possession was split almost evenly, but the stats that measure real danger clearly favored the visitors.
| Stat | Union Santa Fe | Defensa y Justicia |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 50.5 | 49.5 |
| Shots | 26 | 21 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 10 |
| Big chances | 2 | 4 |
| Corners | 6 | 3 |
| Passes | 408 | 428 |
| Fouls committed | 16 | 9 |
The shots on target and big chances numbers go a long way toward explaining why Defensa y Justicia walked away with all three points despite trailing in possession and total shots: the visitors were simply more clinical when it mattered. Our own xG estimate, calculated from the match's shots, points the same way: 3.42 for Defensa y Justicia against 2.28 for Union Santa Fe, a gap that confirms the visitors created more net danger even though the home side put more shots on frame.
Our pre-match preview had given Union Santa Fe a 47 percent chance of winning, with 27 percent for a draw and 26 percent for Defensa y Justicia, with expected goals of 1.72 for the home side and 1.24 for the visitors. The result ran in exactly the opposite direction of that projection: the team with the slimmer odds on paper came away with the win, and did so in convincing fashion on the scoreboard.
What it means in the standings
In Group A, Defensa y Justicia came into this matchday sitting second, with 24 points from 12 matches played (7 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses). Union Santa Fe, meanwhile, sits in tenth place with 13 points from 12 matches (4 wins, 1 draw and 7 losses). The two sides carried an 11-point gap into this game, a distance that Sunday's result at the 15 de Abril only confirmed.
For Defensa y Justicia, the win comes with a catch: Santiago Sosa's red card will rule him out of the team's next match. For Union Santa Fe, the task remains the same as it has been in recent weeks: finding a way to turn attacking production, which was plentiful this Sunday, into goals that actually show up on the scoreboard.
