Jorge de Frutos scores twice as Rayo Vallecano thrash Celta Vigo 3-0

Rayo Vallecano delivered a forceful performance at Vallecas thanks to two goals from Jorge de Frutos and another from Unai Lopez, though the advanced numbers show a much tighter game than the scoreline suggested.

Jorge de Frutos scores twice as Rayo Vallecano thrash Celta Vigo 3-0

Rayo Vallecano delivered an authoritative statement at Vallecas, sending Celta Vigo home with a resounding 3-0 defeat. The headline act was Jorge de Frutos, who scored twice, and the result leaves the Madrid side with a smile that, based on the pregame outlook, hardly anyone saw coming so clearly.

Before kickoff, our projection split the odds almost evenly three ways: 33% for a home win, 32% for a draw and 35% for Celta Vigo, with expected goals set at 1.18 for each side. The match ended up defying those numbers entirely, with Rayo growing into the game and putting it away comfortably in the second half.

The first half was far more even than the final score suggested. Celta Vigo gave an early warning with a header from Sebastian Caceres that went just wide off a corner kick, and Sergio Camello answered with two chances of his own for Rayo, though without any luck in front of goal. The deadlock broke in the 35th minute: Jorge de Frutos received a through ball from Camello on the counterattack and finished with his left foot, low and inside the post. The sides went into the break with Rayo up 1-0.

The second half put it to bed

Celta Vigo came out looking to respond and had two early warnings through Pablo Duran and Ferran Jutgla, but Rayo answered with a blow that all but settled the match. In the 54th minute, Jorge de Frutos struck again, this time with a right-footed shot from the center of the box that found the top corner after a pass from Andrei Ratiu. The 2-0 completely changed the tone of the game.

The third goal came in the 72nd minute, again on the counter: Unai Lopez received the ball from Gnangoro and finished with his right foot from outside the box to make it 3-0. From there, Celta Vigo tried to respond with substitutions, bringing on Iago Aspas and Williot Swedberg among others, and created a few late chances through Aspas and Javi Rueda, but Rayo managed the lead without any scares.

What the numbers say

Rayo Vallecano's control of the match also showed up in the stats, though the gap was not overwhelming: they edged possession and outshot their opponents both overall and on target.

What's striking is that the xG estimated from the match's shots tells a different story than the scoreline: 1.235 for Rayo Vallecano against 1.292 for Celta Vigo. In other words, according to this in-house metric, calculated after the match based on shot locations, Celta Vigo actually generated a touch more danger than their opponents. The gap in the final result comes down to finishing: Rayo converted three of their chances, largely thanks to Jorge de Frutos's sharpness in front of goal, while Celta Vigo failed to turn their output into goals.

What it means in the standings

In the LaLiga table, both sides arrived with 12 points and remain nearly level after this round: Rayo Vallecano sit in 11th place after 10 matches played (3 wins, 3 draws and 4 losses, with a goal difference of -5), while Celta Vigo are 10th after 11 matches played (2 wins, 6 draws and 3 losses, with a goal difference of zero). The points gap between the two sides is minimal, so this result matters in the fine print of the table, even if it doesn't shift the bigger picture much.

What's clear after the match is that Jorge de Frutos made the difference: his two goals broke open a contest that was tight both statistically and on the pitch, and the counterattack was confirmed as Rayo Vallecano's most effective weapon on an afternoon when, according to the finer numbers, Celta Vigo didn't deserve to leave so empty-handed.
