Dudamel and Peirano Clash Publicly After Fan Invasion in Cali-Bucaramanga Draw

The referee had already called time on the match, but out on the pitch at Palmaseca, nobody seemed to get the memo. That confusion, combined with a fan invasion and a finish that went completely off script, ended in a public clash between two coaches who held nothing back.

Deportivo Cali and Bucaramanga drew 1-1 on matchday 8 of the Colombian league, in a game that the home side's stoppage-time goal did nothing to settle down. A group of fans from the north stand poured onto the field, police had to hold back the intruders, and the referee decided to end the match before things spiraled further out of control. Amid the chaos there were shoving matches between players, with Keimer Sandoval and Jose Garcia both sent off, and an unexpected figure also ejected: visiting coach Pablo Peirano, who ran onto the field to ask the referee to stop play.

That's where the controversy began. Cali coach Rafael Dudamel went straight after his counterpart, holding nothing back.

What my colleague did on this occasion is a disgrace. I've watched the video at least five times: he not only came onto the field, but before that he kicked a ball away to prevent play from resuming and walked toward midfield, which is why the referee sent him off, and then he assaulted Keimer Sandoval. Peirano's Response

The Uruguayan didn't stay quiet. Speaking to Win Sports, he first pushed back on Dudamel's account of what actually happened behind the goal, where fans had gathered near a gate that, he explained, was open and posing a real risk.

Play couldn't resume with a gate open and fans on the field. This is laughable, honestly. He should worry about other things. He's wrong, and he's dragging my name and Bucaramanga's through the mud. I'm surprised he's asking for the maximum penalty over what happened.Pablo Peirano

Peirano went further, flatly denying that he had assaulted Sandoval. "The club is going to address what he said, because it's a lie. He says I assaulted a player, but I talked to him, I told the player what was going on. Shifting the focus to attack me is a lot easier than telling what actually happened," he added.

As for running onto the field, the Bucaramanga coach made clear he wasn't trying to get the match suspended, but to stop what he saw as a dangerous situation getting out of hand. He said he was asking for play to stop because, in his account, there were people behind the goal that nobody was controlling. He took responsibility for leaving the technical area and for the red card he was shown, but insisted he acted on instinct given what he saw coming.

The visiting coaching staff backed that version. Assistant coach Javier Tetes firmly defended his manager's reaction: "Pablo stepped in to protect the players' safety. It's wrong to normalize people coming onto the field and violence happening, that has to stop. There was an open door and violent people trying to get in and intimidate players, theirs and ours," he said.

Peirano also offered his read on what might come next on the sporting side, suggesting Bucaramanga would benefit from having the matter settled off the field. "Logically, they'd want the points awarded to us, that's where their desperation is coming from. The opponent never created a real danger for us. We were far superior, but they won't mention that," he said.

With the draw, Cali sit ninth with 8 points and Bucaramanga are seventh with 10, while both clubs await the referee's report, which will determine whether further sanctions follow from what happened at Palmaseca.
