Edin Dzeko Bids Farewell to Bosnia After Nearly Two Decades and 73 Goals

Some farewells arrive as a cold press release. Others read like a letter to old friends. Edin Dzeko chose the latter. The Bosnian forward, 40 years old, confirmed in a heartfelt Instagram message that he will hang up his Bosnia and Herzegovina jersey after nearly two decades of service.

The end has a date now: October 2, in Zenica, when Bosnia hosts Sweden in Nations League qualifying. That match will be Dzeko's 152nd appearance for the national team, closing out an international career that began 19 years ago and turned him, without argument, into the greatest offensive presence the country has ever had.

The numbers back up every word of praise: 73 goals in a Bosnia shirt, many of them decisive, in moments when the team simply had nowhere else to turn but to its number nine. Dzeko didn't just score, he carried the team when it needed carrying, conjured plays out of nothing, and held together a national team that, for years, leaned on his instincts to reach the big stages.

One of those stages was the 2014 World Cup, the first for Bosnia as an independent nation following the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, a process marked by regional wars that Dzeko lived through firsthand as a child. He scored at that tournament, and more than a decade later, he still had enough left in him to log minutes at the 2026 World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, closing a circle that few players ever manage to complete at that age.

In his message, the forward explained why he felt this was the right moment to step aside.

Dzeko was a key piece in Schalke 04's promotion to the Bundesliga last season and just signed a one-year extension with the German club, a sign that even as the Bosnia chapter closes, he has no intention of leaving the field just yet.
