Eggestein strikes in the 25th minute as Freiburg keep winning in the Bundesliga

Eggestein strikes in the 25th minute as Freiburg keep winning in the Bundesliga

A shot from the middle of the box, just inside the left post, was all Freiburg needed to take all three points from the Home Deluxe Arena. Maximilian Eggestein found the net in the 25th minute, and that 0-1 scoreline held up until the final whistle in a Bundesliga match where Paderborn 07 had the ball but couldn't find their shooting boots.

The home side came out looking to control the game, and they did just that, finishing with more possession. But it was Freiburg who struck first and struck sharper. Right from the opening whistle, before even a minute had gone by, Niklas Beste and Igor Matanovic had already tested the waters, and Eggestein himself missed a clear chance from inside the box. The warning signs were there early: the visitors were the more dangerous side in front of goal.

Paderborn answered through Marvin Pieringer and Laurin Ulrich, both looking to catch the opposing keeper off guard in the early going, without luck. The match settled into a rhythm of fouls and corners without much danger from either side, until the 25th minute arrived: off a corner conceded by Santiago Castañeda and a series of rebounds inside the box, Eggestein connected on the shot that opened the scoring, assisted by Derry Scherhant. It proved to be the decisive moment of the match.

A second half of pressure without reward

Trailing on the scoreboard, Paderborn shook things up right at the start of the second half, bringing on Steffen Tigges for Rayan Philippe to add more of a presence in the opposing box. Tigges gave two early warnings within the space of a minute, in the 53rd, with shots that narrowly missed the frame. The home side kept pushing with Laurin Ulrich, Mattes Hansen and later Oliver Batista Meier, who tried his luck after coming on as a substitute, but Freiburg's goal stayed intact.

Freiburg, for their part, managed the lead without giving up on doubling it: Derry Scherhant came close to extending the margin with a direct free kick that grazed the crossbar in the 49th minute, and Yuito Suzuki also had a go before leaving the pitch. Substitutions from Vincenzo Grifo, Lukas Kübler and Keisuke Goto in the second half didn't change the script, as Freiburg defended their lead with discipline.

Yellow cards were handed out for rough play throughout the match: Laurin Curda, Yuito Suzuki, Jano ter Horst, Philipp Lienhart and Yannik Engelhardt all picked one up, a reflection of a physical contest with the fouls tilted toward the home side (16 against Freiburg's 10).

What the numbers say

StatPaderborn 07Freiburg
Possession (%)58.941.1
Shots1416
Shots on target35
Corners54
Passes531362
Fouls committed1610

The numbers tell the story of what unfolded on the field pretty well: Paderborn controlled the ball, racking up 531 passes to Freiburg's 362, but it was Freiburg who generated more shots and, crucially, more shots on target (5 to 3). That gap also shows up in the xG figure calculated after the fact from the match's shots: 1.227 for Freiburg versus 0.849 for Paderborn, a number that backs up the idea that the away win was no fluke, but rather the result of Freiburg being the sharper team near the opposing goal.

What the result means in the standings

The win puts Freiburg in first place with 6 points from 2 matches played, a perfect record and a goal difference of plus 4. Paderborn 07, meanwhile, remain near the bottom of the table with just 1 point after two matchdays, the product of a draw and a loss, and a negative goal difference. The gap between the two sides in the standings was already 5 points before this match, and the result at the Home Deluxe Arena only confirmed the strong start for one side and the struggles to find the net for the other.
