America Dominates But Falls 1-2 to Pachuca Despite Tripling Rival's xG
Despite generating more shots and a higher expected goals tally, the Liga MX leader suffered a surprising home defeat to Pachuca, who got a brace from Bautista and Idrissi.

The leader stumbled at home. America dominated possession, generated twice as many shots on target as its rival, and still left Estadio Banorte with a loss: 1-2 against Pachuca, in a Liga MX match that slipped away just when it seemed under control.
The blow came early. In just the 11th minute, Alan Bautista surprised everyone with a right-footed strike from outside the box that snuck in low, next to the left post, making it 0-1. America appealed for a penalty shortly after, in the 22nd minute, but VAR confirmed there was no foul. With that deficit and unable to find an equalizer, the Eagles went into halftime down 0-1, despite having created several clear chances through Brian Rodriguez, Oscar Perea and Carlos Alvarez.
The equalizer came on the final play of the first half, carrying into the start of the second: Henry Martin, with a close-range shot through the middle of the goal, made it 1-1 off an assist from Erick Sanchez. It was the reward for the home side's persistence in a first half in which America had repeatedly threatened around the Pachuca box.
But the match still had one more twist left. In the 73rd minute, Oussama Idrissi popped up from outside the box and finished with his right foot into the top corner, assisted by Salomon Rondon, making it a final 1-2. America pushed until the end, with clear chances for Miguel Borja and Brian Rodriguez in the closing stretch, but could not level the score again.
Much More Than a Rival with Less of the Ball
The numbers leave a bittersweet taste for America. The club dominated possession with 58.9% to 41.1%, out-shot Pachuca 21 to 16, and put more balls between the posts, 8 to 4. Even so, Pachuca was more clinical with the little it had.
| Stat | Club America | Pachuca |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 58.9 | 41.1 |
| Shots | 21 | 16 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 4 |
| Corners | 6 | 5 |
| Passes | 451 | 312 |
| Fouls committed | 17 | 16 |
That edge also shows up in the match's estimated xG, calculated in-house based on shot location: America generated 2.911 expected goals to just 0.798 for Pachuca. It is a wide gap that confirms the Eagles built the more dangerous chances, but once again, the match was decided by efficiency rather than volume of play.
The result also runs counter to our pre-match projections. In the preview, we gave America a 52% chance of winning, 27% for a draw and just 21% for a visitor's win, with expected goals of 1.71 for the home side and 1.01 for Pachuca. None of that held up: Pachuca took the three points with an efficiency that completely outpaced what was expected.
What It Means for the Standings
America came into this match as the Liga MX leader, with 27 points from 13 games played (eight wins, three draws and two losses). Pachuca, meanwhile, sat in 13th place, with 16 points from 14 games (four wins, four draws and six losses), 11 points behind America in the table. The defeat does not cost America its spot at the top, but it is a reminder that a gap in the standings does not always translate to the field: Pachuca, despite its more modest position, made the most of its two clinical shots to walk away with a result that carries real weight on the road.
