Brighton stuns league leaders Arsenal with 3-0 rout

Nobody saw this coming beforehand. Our model gave Arsenal a 43% chance of winning, against just 27% for Brighton, and projected a tight scoreline with expected goals of 1.08 for the home side and 1.41 for the visitors. At the American Express Stadium, the exact opposite happened: Brighton and Hove Albion thrashed 3-0 an Arsenal side that arrived as league leaders and left with homework still undone.

The game was decided in a first half in which Brighton were far more clinical than the run of play suggested. In the 30th minute, Pascal Groß curled a right-footed finish from outside the box after an assist from Charalampos Kostoulas to make it 1-0. Before the break, in the 44th minute, came the blow that left Arsenal reeling: a counterattack ended at the feet of Kostoulas, who slotted it low, right by the post, for 2-0 at halftime.

The second half opened with the same script. Just after the restart, Kai Havertz conceded a foul that led to a Brighton corner in the 55th minute, and a minute later, in the 56th, Chema Andrés headed home from close range off a Groß cross to make it a decisive 3-0.

An Arsenal side with more of the ball, but no cutting edge

What stands out is that the scoreline didn't reflect who controlled the match. Arsenal dominated possession with 59.8% to Brighton's 40.2% and were far superior in moving the ball around, but they lacked sharpness where it hurts most: in the final third.

Brighton put up more shots, and above all better ones: five on target against just two for Arsenal, and three big chances compared to only one for the visitors. That gap in efficiency also shows up in the xG generated during the match, an in-house estimate calculated from shot locations: 2.161 for Brighton against 1.538 for Arsenal. The numbers back up what was seen on the field: the home side didn't just win, they were also the team that came closer to deserving it by this metric.

Bukayo Saka and company had their moments, with shots from Havertz, Ødegaard and Calafiori failing to find the net, but Arsenal lacked a finishing touch when it mattered. Late on, Brighton nearly extended the lead further: Matt O'Riley tried his luck from the edge of the box and, on the same play, Malick Yalcouyé rattled the right post with a shot.

What the result means for the table

Heading into this matchday, Arsenal sat second with 12 points from 5 games played (4 wins and 1 loss), while Brighton were third with 10 points also from 5 outings (3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss), just 2 points behind. With this result, that gap narrows even further, leaving Brighton breathing down Arsenal's neck at the top of the Premier League.

For Arsenal, it's an uncomfortable takeaway: they arrived as one of the most solid teams in the competition and ran into a version of Brighton that made the most of every clear chance it got. For Brighton, on the other hand, the afternoon produced a rout built on efficiency, with Groß and Kostoulas directly involved in the first two goals and Chema Andrés closing out the scoring with a header. A result that, on paper, nobody expected, and one that now forces everyone to look at the table in a different light.
