Chicago Fire rally twice, rout Colorado Rapids 4-2 behind Bamba brace
Jonathan Bamba scored twice and substitutes Lewandowski and Dithejane added late goals as Chicago Fire defeated Colorado Rapids 4-2 in a six-goal, back-and-forth MLS thriller.

Dick's Sporting Goods Park figured to host a tight contest, and instead delivered a six-goal roller coaster. Chicago Fire FC came away with a 4-2 win over the Colorado Rapids in an MLS match that had it all: leads, equalizers, comebacks and a finish sealed by a pair of substitutes.
Colorado got off to a better start than expected. Morgan Whittaker made it 1-0 in the 21st minute with a left-footed strike from the middle of the box that found the top right corner, assisted by Georgi Minoungou. The home side controlled the ball and created chances, but Chicago wasted little time responding. Right before halftime, in the 40th minute, Jonathan Bamba leveled it at one with a low shot that found the inside of the left post.
The second half was pure chaos. Bamba struck again in the 55th minute to make it 1-2, this time finishing off a cross from Jonathan Dean to complete his brace for the afternoon. But Colorado answered almost immediately. Two minutes later, in the 57th, Paxten Aaronson tapped in a Minoungou cross from point-blank range to tie it at 2-2. The match was suddenly up for grabs.
That's when Robert Lewandowski, on from the bench, took over. In the 73rd minute he slotted home a low left-footed finish inside the left post to make it 2-3, set up by Philip Zinckernagel. Then in the 87th minute, another substitute, Puso Dithejane, sealed the result with a point-blank finish after a through ball from Lewandowski himself, making it a final 2-4.
What the numbers say
Colorado Rapids controlled more of the ball and more of the overall play, but Chicago was sharper where it mattered most: near the opposing goal.
| Stat | Colorado Rapids | Chicago Fire FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 57.3 | 42.7 |
| Shots | 14 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 6 |
| Big chances | 2 | 4 |
| Corners | 5 | 6 |
| Passes | 507 | 377 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 13 |
An in-house xG estimate based on the match's shots backs up what the scoreboard showed: 1.50 for Colorado against 2.87 for Chicago, a gap that reflects the larger number of clear-cut chances the visitors generated despite seeing less of the ball.
The preview published ahead of the match gave Chicago a 40% chance of winning, with Colorado at 32% and a draw at 28%, with expected goals of 1.34 for the home side and 1.54 for the visitors, a combined 2.89. The final result, with six goals on the board, blew well past that goals projection, though the outcome itself, a road win, was indeed the scenario the model considered most likely.
What the result means
For Chicago Fire FC, the win comes amid a fight for the top of the Eastern Conference: the club now has 55 points and holds fourth place, with a record of 16 wins, 7 draws and 10 losses in 33 matches played. The game also belonged to Bamba, who scored twice, along with the decisive late impact of substitutes Lewandowski and Dithejane, who settled matters down the stretch.
For Colorado Rapids, there's the frustration of having controlled the run of play without it translating into the result: they dominated possession and passing but couldn't hold either of their two separate leads. It was a back-and-forth match that ultimately tipped in the visitors' favor.
